I'm still processing CattleCon last week (I'm not sure my feet will ever recover!) but oh my gosh what an experience. I won't lie--I still think a trade show is basically a trade show and they're generally a bit pointless, but like Elle Woods, this trade show had just a little something extra. (Ten points if you catch the reference.) Plus, getting to catch up with old friends and meet new ones was amazing and I enjoyed learning about new things in the space (like Ranchbot Monitoring Solutions's new rain gauge!) and seeing what people are working on. It was lovely to be around so many other ranchers and cattlemen (and their hats!) I didn't get to as many sessions as I would have liked, but it's clear that there is a shift coming in the beef industry and I'm hopeful that we'll move towards a posture of looking to the future instead of always being on the defensive. I'm also excited to share more about my Cattlemen's College session--I'm floored by the positive responses I've been receiving but it tells me that this is an area that people are excited about and that I need to talk about more! The topic was professional ranch management and the next generation of leaders in the ranch management space, and what we can do as an existing industry to foster their growth and development. If you're a Cattlemen to Cattlemen viewer, they wrangled me after my session to share a little about what we talked about. Coming off of these two recent talks (Colorado Farm Show and CattleCon) it's clear that while my messaging isn't for everyone, it's resonating with more people than I ever expected, and I'm really excited to build on this momentum and offer these topics as keynotes and workshops going forward. There are many, many people who believe in a bright future for the beef industry and that investing in the next generation of both family and new producers is key to ushering in that future, and I'm so incredibly here for it. As the Breedr team is heading to Cattle Con National Cattlemen's Beef Association this week it seems a good time to reflect on the last 18 months; moving the family from the UK to Texas, working with some of the most exciting supply chains in the industry, and sadly losing my dad at 91 last Easter. It was my father Guy Wheal who inspired me to build Breedr; a company that at its heart supports ranchers and the meat supply chain to produce better beef more efficiently, using data to prove the enhanced quality. My dad always said that you make your own luck through hard work, being good to others and learning from your mistakes. We built Breedr to support and empower ranchers, cow calf, beef on dairy, backgrounders, feedyards, packers and even retailers to produce exceptional beef in a sustainable, life-enriching way. So to the Pioneers of American Beef who have for centuries innovated to build new businesses; thank you for your support on our journey in the US. TEST LAB TUESDAY What are we testing in the lab today? – CHICKPEAS Chickpeas can be used in various foodstuffs. Hummus is probably one of the most common uses, made by grinding cooked chickpeas into a paste. Chickpeas are also used in various soups, chilis and stews and can also be popped and eaten like popcorn. There are also several byproducts of chickpeas – chickpea hay, husks, straw, culled chickpeas, bran from de-hulling – that are often used in animal feed. For this test, the SWECO Lab was asked to screen a ground chickpea byproduct using various meshes to determine the percentage splits of the customer’s materials.
