With the rising costs of affordable housing it is nice to hear that Mr. Beast was able to give away 100 houses. The question I have here is figuring out how to increase the amount of affordable housing here in the United States. Maybe philanthropists Mr. Beast could donate money to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity to help increase the amount of houses here. We certainly have enough people in need of housing. This would impact families and potentially make a major impact to reduce poverty. In June, the world’s biggest YouTuber built & furnished 100 houses that he gave away for free. - The video grew to 39 million views in 24 hours. - Is currently sitting at over 110 million views. - And has received both praise & backlash. While videos like this are inspiring, they often present a one-sided narrative of giving. They tend to showcase social impact without the dialogue that initiated it, leaving viewers to admire the gesture rather than feel empowered to participate themselves. Don’t get me wrong. 1. There’s no denying that it has helped many families who do not have homes. 2. With his large audience, he’s raising awareness about how content creators can drive change. 🔴 But after watching this video, here are questions this raised for me: 1. Proximity of the new homes to essential services: How close is the nearest hospital? While MrBeast and his team do not have control over this, a larger question that comes up for me with this type of philanthropy is whether or how it will leave families in a better position to access critical services. Giving the families bikes to assist with transportation is one thing, and it’s a great gesture, but it’s also just one piece of the puzzle. 2. Sustainability & maintenance: Building homes is an incredible feat, but what about the long-term sustainability of these houses? Are the families equipped to handle the ongoing costs of maintenance, utilities, and potential repairs? With situations like this, it’s important to have answers to these questions. So that the family isn’t left to deal with things they can’t fix. And the impact isn’t just short-term. 3. Participatory Decision-making: What would it look like if residents were involved in designing and building their homes? When people have a say in shaping their living spaces, they often feel a stronger sense of ownership and pride in the outcome. This approach can also foster a deeper connection to the community, as the residents are more likely to maintain and care for something they helped create. The sustainability behind these types of philanthropic projects depends on how we design these efforts and who is involved in the design process.
