Foreign policy expert: Black Sea security | Ukraine | Türkiye | Professor of National Security Studies, George C. Marshall Center Non-resident Senior Fellow, Atlantic Council [Views are my own]
Two years into Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the battle for the Black Sea - once an “invisible front” of the Russian war - has come into the spotlight. With multiple global repercussions of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, it has become clear that what happens in the Black Sea does not stay in the Black Sea. Invading sovereign states, undermining the freedom of navigation and security of supply chains, violating international maritime law, using electronic warfare and spoofing, threatening the safety of critical infrastructure - all of these Russian malign activities in the Black Sea create dangerous precedents for the future warfare far beyond the Black Sea coasts. It is a high time to develop a bold and comprehensive strategy to deter Russia, bolster defense capabilities of regional allies, and demonstrate a firm resolve to defend rules-based order to Iran and China. I had a privilege to lead the George C. Marshall Center effort to organize a conference, in cooperation with the Romanian National Defense University, to explore ways to strengthen NATO’s defense and deterrence in the region, ramp up cooperation among the regional states, and discuss the US Black Sea strategy. My heartfelt thanks to the GCMC team for a terrific support on all stages of preparation, to our partners, and, of course, to all our participants and speakers. #GCMC's event held in #Bucharest, Romania, March 20-21, with the topic "Changing dynamics in the wider Black Sea Region" aimed to foster a collaborative discussion on potential avenues towards enhancing the security and prosperity of the #BlackSea region. 📢 New publication: In the latest Ideas Indaba contribution, Ambassador Tekeda Alemu articulates how to advance the African position on the reform of the Security Council in the context of the Summit for the Future, arguing that 'the outcome document of the Summit of the Future, the Pact for the Future, if it is to be taken seriously, would need to take seriously the African common position. It wouldn't help to focus on the potential weakness of the common position, which can be rectified in due course.' For more, read the article here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eMWNa9-F

Read the Research on Youth and Security - "Perceptions, views and challenges of young people in North Macedonia" 👉 https://lnkd.in/dvudT_-f
🚨 What are young people worried about in North Macedonia? 🚨 In a world where security is a growing concern, understanding the fears of young people is crucial for building a safer society. Our recent report asked young people in 🇲🇰 what worries them most, on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the most concerning. The results? 🕵️ Organized crime (7.1/10) 🌪️ Natural disasters (6.9/10) 💥 Armed conflict in the Western Balkans (6.7/10) ⚽ Surprisingly, violent sports fans rank as the lowest concern at 5.7/10. ⚠️ Why does this matter? Because the security landscape of tomorrow will be shaped by the concerns of today's youth. If we fail to listen, we risk ignoring the real dangers they feel—and leaving critical vulnerabilities unaddressed. Their voices can guide us in creating policies that reflect their reality, not ours. Read the report of the OSCE Mission to Skopje 👉 https://lnkd.in/dS69akAN
