🚧 Ten projects from nine DOTs won top prizes in the 2024 America’s Transportation Awards competition. Among them was Webber’s SH-146 project in Seabrook, TX! The SH-146 project included widening the existing multilane paved highway into a 6-lane paved highway with 4 additional express lanes. This project reduces traffic congestion and improves mobility and safety for the Seabrook community. 👏 Congratulations to the project team on a job well done! 🎥 Take a look at the award video from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials! https://ow.ly/lctx50T7qxu #Construction #Safety #WeAreWebber

It's #TransportationTuesday! Today we are spotlighting our Shellhorn Road Extension project in Loudoun County.🛣 J2 is playing a pivotal role in the extension and realignment of Shellhorn Road, which, once completed, will ease congestion and improve accessibility to the region, including Dulles International Airport, the Loudoun Gateway Metro Station, and its parking facility. This project will enhance mobility within the heavily traveled area and offer alternative routes for local travelers who wish to avoid the Dulles Greenway while still reaching their destinations. Check out more about this project below, and how we met their challenges with solutions! #J2Projects #ProjectHighlights #LoudounCounty #ConnectingtheCommunity #DesignWithYourFutureinMind

May 10th in History: The final "Golden Spike" was hammered in to complete one of America's largest construction projects on May 10th, 1869! That was the day the transcontinental railroad was finished. This feat helped created a "smaller" nation. Prior to the railroad it took as long as 6 months to cross the nation - after its completion it took only 4 days. The project, however, came at a high cost - not just monetarily either, but also in lives and land (including native lands) through eminent domain! It is still considered one of the largest construction projects in American history with 1,868 miles of rail installed. Construction practices, thankfully, have become MUCH safer today and more ethically conscience. www.belfrybuilders.com #construction #commercialconstruction #railroad #history #lancaster #contracting

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is considering expanding and upgrading the Lee County rest stop on I-75, located just South of Fort Meyers. To this end, WGI - an engineering, land surveying, and professional services firm - is conducting a feasibility study that covers a wide range of area renovations and expanded facilities. As part of this study, ecoPreserve's Peter Westlake has documented ways to configure an Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) at the rest stop. Pete's observations and recommendations included shore power locations for trucks and charger locations for trucks, buses, and cars. #evci #transportation #sustainability

Glad this one managed to get the go ahead during the allocated canal stoppage window after months of discussing different engineering methods for repair. Lots of time spent with the Trusts Hydrologists due to water complexities at this location especially with the power station abstraction only a short distance away from the bridge. #canalrivertrust #civilengineering #construction #bridgeengineering #networkrail #amco

In 2023, PIARC - World Road Association reaffirmed its strong commitment to advancing road safety, especially in low- and middle-income countries (#LMICs), by spearheading the #Road_Safety Knowledge Exchange Project. This ambitious project, conducted in collaboration with esteemed partners such as the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), tackled multifaceted road safety challenges prevalent across the globe. The Road Safety Knowledge Exchange Project was meticulously designed to address a spectrum of critical issues, ranging from vehicle safety and speed management to infrastructure design and human behavior. Recognizing that a staggering 90% of traffic fatalities occur in LMICs, PIARC's Technical Committee 3.1 "Road Safety" took proactive steps to evaluate, identify, and disseminate evidence-based solutions tailored to the unique contexts of these regions. The culmination of this project is marked by the release of a comprehensive final report, which encapsulates invaluable insights, recommendations, and best practices gleaned from extensive research and collaboration. By leveraging the expertise of stakeholders, policymakers, and practitioners, PIARC aims to equip LMICs with the necessary tools and strategies to mitigate road traffic crashes and fatalities effectively. https://lnkd.in/dc-A3G4N John Milton, PhD PE RSP2IB PTOE Marco Irzik

Major roads through built-up areas ("through-roads") are often risky, due to high traffic volumes, presence of pedestrians, intersections and accesses. This is why various traffic calming measures are introduced, such as gateways or pedestrian refuge islands. However, their safety impacts (in terms of crashes) are often unknown. To overcome the limitations of crash-based evaluations, we used the GPS-based data from a sample of Czech and Polish through-roads to develop the proactive Speed-Safety Index, which combines speed, speed variance and traffic volume. The index proved to be well correlated to crash frequency and it also proved the effect of spacing between traffic calming measures: the longer spacing, the smaller speed-reducing effect. Further progress may include testing the index in different contexts. If the approach proves feasible, it could become an alternative indicator for a proactive network-wide road assessment, as called for by the EU Road Infrastructure Safety Management Directive. The paper, developed in cooperation of CDV - Transport Research Centre (Jan Elgner, Veronika Valentová) and Cracow University of Technology (Radosław Bąk, Mariusz Kieć), is available at:

Exciting News: Faster Congestion Relief on I-4 Coming Soon! 🚗 Big strides for Floridians and tourists alike! Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced that the long-awaited congestion relief along the Interstate 4 (I-4) corridor will arrive by the end of 2025. This acceleration is part of the Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative, and it means we'll feel the benefits five years earlier than expected! The focus is on ChampionsGate and World Drive, where construction will begin ahead of schedule. These auxiliary lanes are expected to make a significant dent in traffic, improving the quality of life for both residents and visitors. FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue emphasized that their primary aim is to reduce the time spent in traffic, so everyone can spend more time doing what they love. Kudos to FDOT for expediting these critical projects! A special shoutout goes to the innovative Modified Phased Design-Build (MPDB) contracting process. This groundbreaking method allows multiple teams to work simultaneously, speeding up delivery timelines. It's all about collaboration and leveraging expertise from across the industry—meaning we're in for some major improvements and efficient solutions. 🚀 #FloridaInfrastructure #I4Relief #InnovationInAction
