Opened in 1961, when bridges were constructed for a 50-year lifespan, the I-5 Bridge over Columbia River is long overdue for a replacement. Average Daily Traffic was about 35K 63 years ago and has mushroomed to over 300K at its peak, shortly before Covid. Good news for Euston and HS2 approach!

Hear hear 👏🏻 Having worked on a wide variety of schemes myself, from big (HS2 / flood risk & drainage for large housing development sites / large highway schemes) to small (3 steps for a landowner to access and maintain a watercourse / a simple dropped crossing / a train station car park layout) all of the principles outlined here should still apply, in theory. It's not rocket science; It's engineering integrity.

The Walk Bridge in Norwalk, Connecticut is a swing bridge built in 1896 that carries four tracks of the Metro-North Railroad line over the Norwalk River. An incredibly important report that the new government would do well to read (and my former colleagues)! Having had two stints as HS2 Minister, overseen the Oakervee Review which 'saved' HS2 version 1.x for a while and as someone who remains convinced that 'something must be done' on north/south connectivity, I really welcome the insight this provides. Frequent changes of political ownership are inevitable - but there is the tyranny of small incremental changes in response to specific challenges that may make sense in isolation, but taken consecutively over many years, move a project away its original intentions. Politicians and by extension the media tend to focus on the project's name rather than its purpose, as well, so the project becomes an exercise in construction rather than problem solving, progressively undermining buy-in. The report mentions how important Ministerial oversight and accountability is - and i spent every day realising the scale of what i was trying to oversee and trying to work out how best to do that. The way in which a Minister interacts with major projects has still not been fully assessed - we mustn't micro-manage, but we must have an effective lever to pull to hold to account. At the time Ministers were offered a day's worth of 'training' on infrastructure management - so much more was needed, and so much more I could write generally on HS2!

ANNOUNCES THE START OF THE SECOND BLUE WATER BRIDGE REHABILITATION PROJECT POINT EDWARD, March 28, 2024 – The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (The FBCL) is announcing the Second Blue Water Bridge (SBWB) rehabilitation project, set to start on May 29, 2024. In keeping with our continuous investment in stewardship, for the first time in over two decades, the SBWB will be closed, while the First Blue Water Bridge (FBWB) will operate with bidirectional traffic to maintain essential operations for commerce and commuters. The vital rehabilitation work, much of which will occur beneath the bridge, is key to ensuring our high standards of safety and efficiency. By actively managing disruptions, including extending work hours into nights and weekends, we aim to manage the project’s timeline effectively. Our joint efforts with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) are vital, enabling the execution of crucial maintenance activities on both sides of the border with considered measures to manage traffic flow. Key Highlights of the Rehabilitation Project: Bidirectional Traffic: The FBWB will operate bidirectionally, sustaining traffic flow in both directions, while the SBWB undergoes rehabilitation. Wide Load Restrictions: To ensure safe navigation through the construction zone, loads will be limited to less than 3m (10 feet) in width.
