What does a typical day look like for an instructional designer? This is a question I hear all the time from those exploring ID as their next career move. And it's no secret that IDs manage a lot of tasks. From conducting research, and answering emails, to meetings with clients and stakeholders. Not to mention the hours spent storyboarding, managing the LMS, and developing eLearning. How do they do it all while keeping a good work-life balance? As I continue to seek out new work opportunities, I am reminded of the "curse of knowledge." I recently sent out a message to one of my contacts in the food industry to ask if they knew of any Senior Learning Designer positions available within their network. Their response back asked "what does a Senior Instructional Designer do?" Since I have worked in learning design for so long I made the wrong assumption that everyone knows what we do. Bad call on my part. So if you are also wondering what exactly it is that we Learning Designers do, here is a very brief breakdown based on the 5 key job functions: Analyze: Identify learning needs, goals, and target audience. Conduct needs analysis to determine skill gaps and desired outcomes. Design: Outline the course structure, learning objectives, and assessment strategies. Create a blueprint for content delivery, ensuring alignment with goals. Develop: Produce learning materials such as slides, videos, eLearning modules, or activities. Use tools like authoring software to create and finalize content. Implement: Deliver the learning program to the audience via workshops, eLearning platforms, or other methods. Provide facilitators with necessary resources and support. Evaluate: Assess the program’s effectiveness using feedback, quizzes, and performance data. Instructional designers don't have this-a comprehensive guide on career progression. I firmly believe career progression should not be abstract. The more vague it is, the more we leave it to chance and 'knowing the right people'- the less it becomes about what you can tangibly do. So I'm going to specify what top companies are looking for from their senior instructional designers- use this to reflect on the experience you have, and plan for taking on what you haven't done yet- As a senior instructional designer/instructional design manager you should: 1. Collaborate with the client team to understand the business problem, identify the solution approach and work through the design, development, and delivery phases. 2. Conduct Training Needs Analysis to develop the training curriculum. 3. Develop high-quality and detailed content outlines as per the curriculum. 4. Design standards, guidelines, templates, and checklists for the proposed learning solution. 5. Collaborate with internal and client stakeholders to design and develop relevant and effective training deliverables. 6. Review training deliverables to ensure that the deliverable quality is as per the project quality parameters and industry standards. 7. Identify and share the risks with the Project Leads/Functional Manager to discuss possible solutions/mitigations/alternatives. 8. Coach instructional designers and content developers to prepare materials for instructor development workshops. 9. Provide clear and effective feedback to team with the intent to develop their instructional design skills. 10. Identify opportunities to implement new and innovative learning strategies into the solution. Also, pay close attention to desirable criteria such as: 1. Leverage proficiency in instructional design, research and information gathering, content analysis, content design, knowledge of latest trends in the learning industry. 2. Apply your strong knowledge in industry standard design/rapid authoring tools such as Articulate/Captivate/ Lectora/ Camtasia/ SAP Enable Now/WalkMe and be comfortable with client proprietary authoring tools. An ideal candidate should be well-versed with the technical functionalities and limitations of these tools. 3. Work in a problem-solving global environment with Cross cultural competence. 4. Possess excellent interpersonal and writing skills with a strong business acumen.
