Reminiscing about Fridays immersive Ramboll Design Excellence Forum #REDF_24, with LRL Space and UCL held at the suitably fitting UCL PEARL (Person Environment Activity Research Laboratory).
Vanessa Andreotti brought the concept of Separability, how we as humans see ourselves as individuals, competing with each other, rewarded by society, but ultimately placing us on a path to extinction, vs shifting us towards much needed quantum entanglement. Leading us to 3 clear takeaways:
· Build with entanglement in mind, design with the understanding that your work is entangled with all forms of life
· Decarbonisation is not enough
· Create adaptive systems
And my personal take away, the analogy of mother nature being a cigar smoking drag queen!
The immersion factor shifted gear with the introduction of Chiara Luzzana who introduced the concept that life is writing your own soundtrack, and that every place has a story to tell.
My personal highlight of the morning was Paul Astle. Paul took the opportunity to highlight that in creating amazing places, it is often easy to dismiss the broader impact, in addition to the contentious subject of where the boundary of those impacts should be considered - with embodied carbon being just one way to connect the amazing places to the damage they are causing. My takeaway being the need for us all to:
· See
· Measure
· ACT
My overarching reflection to Paul's session, to ‘ask questions as a child would’ such as – Where do these things come from? - As the mother of a 5 year old and 3 year old, I can relate to the curious thirst for knowledge we could all have if we choose to take Paul (and Clara’s) approach.
The morning ended with a question from Oliver Wildman on a subject I consider frequently, ‘Who is the voice of nature in the design team meeting?’ As a sustainability professional who sits across multiple disciplines, nature and design teams are one specific aspect, however never has it been clearer the role we all need to play, the need to work collaboratively across all business units, industries and regions to truly drive understanding and change.
