Lead Front End Web Developer | React Applications Engineer (User Interface Development | Accessibility | Leadership | Mentorship | Innovation)
What are your thoughts on job titles? For years, I have had "Front End Web Developer" on my CV. That has always worked for me. After all, I develop web applications, and I focus on the front end. Based on experience and expertise (and feedback from peers), I am senior level. Do I add "Senior" to the title? (Or "Lead", or any other similar adjective?) Some would argue that I should use "Engineer" instead of "Developer", based on my seniority. I don't like to call myself an engineer. (I never studied engineering and certainly haven't kept up my math skills. Creating Web apps does not involve the same rigour as building bridges or spaceships. Etc.) But am I hurting my chances by not calling myself an engineer? I choose to focus on the front end, but I have experience working with servers, routers, databases, and other back-end tech (PHP, Python, Java, C++, etc). I don't think I should call myself "Full Stack", because I've done so little commercially on the back end in the past 18 years, but should I drop "Front End" from the title? For the past 12 years, I've worked a lot more with JavaScript than with HTML or CSS. For the past 5 years, the focus has been on React applications. Should I call myself a "JavaScript Developer" or even a "React Developer"? I feel that's limiting, but maybe the opposite is true. I've been a contractor for nearly 18 years, but I have actively been considering perm opportunities for the past 5, especially this past year and a half. I don't, therefore, think I should add "Contract" to the title. I've been praised by colleagues as someone who just gets things done. Maybe I should change my title to "Developer Who Gets Things Done"? (OK, maybe that one is a bit facetious...) Why do I need a title anyway? As a contractor in this IR-35 world, the title is meaningless. As a perm, my employer will determine my title. It seems such a simple thing, but it feels like such a minefield.

Exceptional Senior UI UX Consultant confirming with references from the USA 🇺🇸, Dubai 🇦🇪, Nigeria and the Nigerian Airforce 🇳🇬, Germany 🇩🇪, South Africa 🇿🇦, and Canada 🇨🇦. With 5+ years of working experience.
Firstly, 95%+ applicants didn't ask for job description before applying or stating what they can do. I was shocked. It was quite sad that some persons im my opinion qualified for their Cvs to be sent for review, but their portfolio wasn't good enough to have come from my end as reference. Thirdly, LinkedIn account wasn't optimized enough to get my client to trust their service. LinkedIn optimization is not about the explorations and case studies, it's about knowing who you are for real at a glance as well what you can do, and what you've done. Also understand that sometimes it can be a bit too much for clients to review. Thus, we don't always have to show all our jobs and explorations. LinkedIn has only seen 2.5% of all my jobs. I always advice, have a special CV and portfolio for certain categories of clients. Very important. Don't be in a hurry to apply. It always works for me. It may work for you too. Unto the next one. I'll keep you updated.
