HOW TO GET MEN TO TALK ABOUT EMOTIONS AND SEEK HELP EARLY 👉🏿 What a great time I had chatting with Dr Marianne Trent on her podcast. Thank you for creating the space to spotlight men's mental health. 👉🏿 Dr Trent and I got to know about each other's work via LinkedIn and began following posts mutually, till we agreed to sit down and chat after my LinkedIn post on getting men to talk about our emotions using what I referred to as the A-F. https://lnkd.in/e3w_SVMR 👉🏿 In the podcast we discussed 💡Challenging the myth that men don't talk about emotions and how to encourage the opposite. 💡What are the toxic messages about mental health interventions we may be inadvertently propagating as professionals 💡 How to prevent burn out 🔥 as a mental health professional 💡At the very end I shared the nearly tragic story of how Tripart Care was birthed and how I almost did not go ahead with it. I hope you enjoy the podcast. https://lnkd.in/etCkC-Jv

I was asked by the National Centre for Mental Health, alongside research assistant Chloe, to talk more about PMDD, why the link between hormones and mental health is too often overlooked, and why the research taking place at The NCMH is vital to improving the lives of women/AFAB individuals with PMDD. Amid our world feeling an absolute mess right now, there are those who are fighting anxiety, the power of positive thinking is not always the answer. What are your thoughts? Annie --- Don’t fear emotions such as regret, anger or worry. As psychiatry, which uses medical and biological methods to treat mental disorders, has largely overtaken psychotherapy, which relies on non-biological approaches such as conversation and counselling, psychotherapists have sought alternative challenges. One common approach is to focus on enhancing the happiness of mentally healthy people, rather than relieving the mental pain and trauma of those who are suffering. This is known as “positive psychology” and has recently expanded to accommodate not only psychologists, but also social workers, life coaches and new age therapists. But there is evidence to suggest the approach has a negative side. ...READ More... #mentalhealth #stress #anxiety #psychology Hon.

I came across a post where someone was seeking advice on how to deal with depression so it doesn't precipitate suicide. Over 80% of the people in the comment section advised the person to pray. They told the person to go back and set things right with his creator. Some recommended fasting, while others recommended midnight prayers. It was heart-rending reading these comments, and frankly, I was wondering where we got it all wrong. How did we get to this place? An average Nigerian knows little or nothing about psychology, psychiatry, or psychotherapy. It's now commonplace to take people with mental disorders to the church. Pastors are now delivering people with bipolar disorders, imposing fasting on people with sleep apnea, and using coconut water to pray for those with ADHD. These actions of ours would petrify people in saner climes. I understand it is a "Nigerian thing" to always take the right cases to the wrong places but haba! We need to change that habit. Imagine a woman telling her pastor that her husband doesn't satisfy her in bed. You're telling your pastor so that he'll do what ehh, satisfy you or what? Or maybe preach satisfaction to your husband's phallus? Isn't that a problem you need a marriage therapist or counsellor for? Why are you taking it to your pastor? It's high time we changed this erroneous practice. I want you to understand that the good Lord gave us the sacred gifts of psychology and psychiatry for a reason. When it comes to your mental health, prayer should augment your efforts( which is to see a therapist) and not be the "effort." Seek help in the right places. The Empath ✍️
