🇪🇹 The largest dam in #Africa!   Located 700 km north west of the capital of #Ethiopia along the Blue Nile, at the end of the works the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam will be the largest dam in the continent and among the top 10 in the world: 1,800 m long, 170 m high and with a total volume of 10.4 million m³.   The project involves the construction of a main dam in Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC), with 2 power stations installed at the foot of the dam, and is completed by a 15,000 m3/s capacity concrete spillway and a rockfill saddle dam.   Once it is put into service, the #GERD will increase the amount of electricity produced in the country by 270% and bolster Ethiopia’s role as an energy exporter to neighboring countries.   #Webuild #CleanHydroEnergy 👉 https://bit.ly/4b3W0pR

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (or #Gerd) aims to supply energy to a country of 120 million inhabitants, the second largest in all of #Africa, of which only a third has regular access to electricity. The construction has cost between 4,000 and 5,000 million euros and has been 30% financed by Chinese loans. After numerous delays, in 2022 the first of the thirteen turbines was activated, allowing it to begin generating energy and just a few months ago it finally completed its filling. The president of the Executive Committee of the National Council for the Coordination of the Dam, Demeke Mekonnen, assured a few days ago that the project was "94.6%" complete. The statistical accuracy of the statement (any politician would have said 95%) is unknown if it is due to his great honesty or a particular taste for mathematics. Impossible agreement The announcement of the project caused great misgivings in its downstream neighbors and although the three main affected parties (#Egypt🇪🇬, #Sudan🇸🇩#Ethiopia🇪🇹) have been involved in numerous negotiating tables, conferences, meetings, etc., so far they have not been able to resolve an issue which can still be summarized in the following question: whose water is the Nile? Ethiopia, for now, benefits from its superior position (geographically speaking) and does not give in; They will decide how much water flows through the dam, built on the tributary known as the #Blue #Nile, just 15 kilometers from the border with Sudan and which provides 86% of the river's total water. #Egypt frets that the dam will choke off the life-giving waters of the Nile. It has good reason to worry. Some 95% of the water consumed by the country’s 115m people is drawn from the river. Previous dams on the Nile have altered the floods and flow of sediments that the country relies on to grow food. The Nile Waters Agreements of 1929 and 1959 granted #Egypt and #Sudan the right to use all of the water between them, and gave Egypt the right of veto over upstream construction projects. #Ethiopia, which was left out of the agreements, does not recognise them, prompting the disagreement over the impact of the #GERD

This not only empowers Ethiopians but also positions the country as a potential electricity exporter to neighboring nations. Filling the Reservoir: A Point of Contention. The dam's filling process has been a source of tension with Egypt, which relies heavily on Nile waters. Egypt fears the GERD will significantly reduce its water flow, impacting agriculture and jeopardizing its water security. Ethiopia, on the other hand, maintains the dam will regulate water flow and minimize evaporation, ultimately benefiting Egypt. Trilateral Negotiations: Seeking Common Ground. The international community has played a crucial role in facilitating negotiations between Ethiopia, Sudan (another Nile basin nation), and Egypt. These talks aim to establish a filling and operation agreement that addresses the concerns of all parties. Beyond the Dam: A Catalyst for Cooperation? The GERD, despite its challenges, presents an opportunity for Nile basin countries to move beyond disputes and forge a more cooperative future. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), positioned on the Blue Nile, is set to become the largest hydroelectric plant in Africa and one of the top ten worldwide. GERD could make Ethiopia a major energy exporter in the region with an expected output of 6,450 megawatts, or three times the capacity of the Hoover Dam (2,080 megawatts).  This monumental project, costing approximately $5 billion, will not only boost Ethiopia’s economic growth through energy exports but also help meet local energy demands and give the country a political advantage over downstream countries. It was my pride to be a part of luminaries of various fields including power sector for making my expert opinions towards the discussion on Policies & Programmes of Government of Nepal to be presented for the upcoming Fiscal Year 2024/25 (BS 2080/81) at PMO, Singh Durbar, Kathmandu. My major areas of inputs to the discussion program remained: #Using Climate Financing-like international funds in hydropower development of Nepal #Hydrology penaly attributable to diminished discharge in rivers during dry season resulted from climate change to be waived to private sector in hydropower projects #MCC projects associated with transmission infrastructures to be expedited for timely completion #Institutional and policy frameworks to be formulated for open access in transmission infrastructures #Nepal Power Trading Company, which has alrady been licensed, to be operationalized in the coming Fiscal Year and trading licenses be issued to Private Sector also for domestic and cross border power trading I am grateful to the Prime Minister's Office for the official invitation for my inputs during the discussion. #MeTowardsNationhood

The outstanding dues of power projects of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) have alarmingly increased to a record Rs493 billion or $1.8 billion as of last month, showing an increase of over three-fourths in a span of just seven months.
