Last weekend was a whirlwind of college reunions! My husband reconnected with his fellow business school alumni and we both relived some incredible memories at our alma mater, Tufts University. Our kids climbed on the canon, we relaxed on the President’s Lawn but we skipped Bowen Gate (No need! We’re married! IYKYK).  Jumbo pride runs deep over here. Attending these reunions sparked some reflection on how much we've grown since graduation. Here are 3 key takeaways that have shaped my journey: 1. Be Curious: College taught us how to learn and curiosity is what keeps us growing. My fellow alumni are as keen to ask questions, dig into problems and explore possibilities as they were in class so many years ago.   2. Be a Learner: The things we learned in college are just the foundation. Continuous learning is key and I like to do that through podcasts, lots of reading and debating issues and ideas with my colleagues and friends. 3. Be a friend: The connections we make in college extend far beyond graduation. These reunions were a powerful reminder of the value of staying in touch. It is not about formal networking.  It is about connection, friends, fun and inspiration.  My fellow alumni inspire me with what they are up to and remind me that we are all a work in progress.  I can’t wait for the next reunion! #TuftsUniversity #Reunion #LifelongLearning #Networking #lawyer

Welcome back to Perla’s Corner! 🌟 Last week, I spent time with the Communications Department in a team-building exercise. The team and I built bikes later donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Worth. Building the bikes was an adventure as we were divided into groups to solve different puzzles and problems to receive the parts needed to make the bike. When I was working with my team, we were all trying to solve each problem together and on our own, but it was tricky when some of the questions seemed incomplete. Other teams were also struggling but kept working together to solve their puzzles. No one ever said it was a competition, but we all assumed it was, so no one was helping one another outside their team. Once we all realized we had to cross team lines to work together in one big group, we were able to finish building the bikes a lot easier. This experience was fun and made me happy to be a part of it. Career and Technical Education Pays Off New research shows that students who concentrate in career and technical education (CTE) programs in high school are significantly more likely to be employed after graduation. A study from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce found that CTE concentrators had an 89% employment rate after high school versus just 72% for those who did not focus on career preparation. The data underscores how vital CTE and workforce development programs are for setting up youth for success and smoothing the transition from school to career. Preparing young people for adulthood is all about providing them with the right blend of experiences; both in and outside of school. Building literacy, numeracy, and content knowledge will give students a foundation for success; but we need to pair that with real-world experiences where they can apply that knowledge in real time. When we think about “real-world” experiences; we often think of internships, “on the job” skills, or daily tasks and other things we’d categorize as “adulting”. However, outdoor excursions offer kids and young adults the opportunities to explore and experience things beyond the day-to-day. It’s one thing to learn about water health and environmental studies in a classroom; but when you get the chance to do a multi-week excursion along the Hudson river and drink from a natural water source, you amplify your learning to a new level. That’s why I invited Greg Morrissey to the De Facto Leaders podcast for episode 163. If you enjoy hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities you’ll want to listen. Trust me, you’ll thank me later :) Greg Morrissey is an educator, explorer, and founder of Mountain Goat Movement -- an organization that provides transformative adventures for students while connecting them to leading explorers, educators, and storytellers. Think: education through adventure. Projects can be as short as one day or as extensive as a multi-week expedition, everywhere from the Adirondacks to Antarctica. In this conversation, we discuss: ✅Bringing traditional curriculum and content areas to authentic outdoor experiences. ✅How to use excursions to help kids work as a team and form connections with peers. ✅The concept of “tiered” expeditions: Offering different activities to support different levels of experience with the outdoors ✅What habits and skills can you practice in daily life to prepare for a multi-day or multi-week adventure ✅A behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to prepare for quality outdoor education; including what Greg is doing to raise funds for scholarships to increase equity. During the Fall semester, our Volunteer and Community Engagement class (PAD 622) continued working on collaborative efforts involving NKU Graduate Education and Community Shares of Greater Cincinnati. Students in this class worked with THREE nonprofit organizations on NINE service-learning projects: Community Shares of Greater Cincinnati: 1) new board member orientation handbook with updated forms; and 2) board member survey, analyses, and recommendations related board engagement. MUSE, Cincinnati's Women's Choir: 1) virtual information session for prospective volunteers; 2) draft volunteer position descriptions and recruitment ideas; 3) new volunteer handbook; and 4) suggested updates and adjustments to the existing member handbook. American Legacy Theatre: 1) recommendations for a more formal internship program; 2) draft volunteer position descriptions and application form; and 3) volunteer orientation materials. Thanks to all for being VERY ENGAGED in this service-learning experience!
