Somewhere along the pathway to decarbonisation, we have lost momentum on the conversation of managing energy systems effectively in mining… thinking strategically about how energy systems change, and what is needed in terms of design of flexible and AI-enabled environments... all in a world where talent shortages and new energy sources force rapid change in operating strategy. Our local team have brought this back to the surface, with a great paper on #energy management in mining - posing the question, "What does it look like to run an operation in a system comprising of portfolios of #renewable generation and #storage assets?" and questioning how ready we are as an industry to invest to get ahead of the game. Having listened to and watched the team prepare this piece of work, you can't help but see enthusiasm, and the knowhow!! Reach out to Justine Winston Smith, Fiona Bishop and Stef Pienaar if you want to hear more about it! Report link is here: https://deloi.tt/47WA91O #energymanagement #mining

Around the country there is a legal requirement for mining companies to limit Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in the work place to 0.1mg/m3 (either Maximum or in most states Time Weighted). However, particulate matter from Paraffinic Oil (Renewable Diesel) is not the same substance as Particulate Matter from Mineral Diesel (i.e. DPM)… This post explains why #australianmining #australia #mining #miningindustry #renewableenergy #renewables #renewablefuels #cleanenergy #renewablediesel #diesel #dpm #regulatorycompliance #energy #greenenergy #carbonneutral

Glencore's initiative to construct a 25MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant at the Rhovan Vanadium mining and processing facility represents a commendable stride towards sustainability in the mining sector. This project not only aligns with global environmental goals but also sets a precedent for integrating renewable energy sources into mining operations. Soil Solutions could significantly contribute to enhancing the sustainability of such projects in several ways: 1) Soil Stabilization for Solar PV Foundations: The construction of solar PV plants requires stable and durable foundations to support the solar panels. Soil Solutions can provide environmentally friendly soil stabilization techniques to ensure the integrity and longevity of these foundations, reducing the need for traditional, more carbon-intensive construction materials. 2) Dust Control Measures: Mining and construction activities generate considerable dust, which can negatively impact air quality and solar panel efficiency. Soil Solutions offers innovative dust control solutions that can be applied to the construction site and surrounding mining areas, ensuring that dust emissions are minimized and that solar panels operate at optimal efficiency by remaining clean and unobstructed. 3) Erosion Control: The establishment of a solar PV plant in a mining area necessitates effective erosion control measures to protect the infrastructure and surrounding environment. Soil Solutions can implement sustainable erosion control techniques that safeguard the soil around the solar plant, preventing sediment runoff and ensuring the longevity of the solar installation. 4) Sustainable Infrastructure Development: Beyond the solar PV plant itself, the entire mining operation can benefit from sustainable infrastructure development practices. Soil Solutions can provide guidance and solutions for creating eco-friendly access roads, water management systems, and other necessary infrastructure that support both the mining operations and the new solar plant, aligning with Glencore's sustainability objectives. 5) Environmental Rehabilitation: After the construction phase, Soil Solutions can assist in the rehabilitation of the site, using techniques to restore vegetation and promote biodiversity around the solar plant and mining area. This helps to offset the ecological footprint of mining activities and contributes to a positive environmental legacy. By partnering with Glencore on the Rhovan project, Soil Solutions could play a pivotal role in not only reducing the carbon footprint of the mining operations through the solar PV plant but also in ensuring that the construction and ongoing operation of the plant are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner. This collaboration could serve as a model for sustainable practices in the mining industry, showcasing how innovative solutions can be applied to meet energy needs while committing to environmental stewardship.

The mining sector has the potential to use up to 180 TWh of additional clean energy from the current levels, according to estimates from S&P Global Clean Energy Technology. The increase would be driven mainly by the mining of energy-intensive metals such as gold, copper, and platinum, as well as iron ore due to its large market size. Approximately 32 TWh of renewable PPAs have been signed by mines, with only 1.9 GWh being produced at on-site installations. Australia and Chile account for over half of the current use of clean energy in mining.
