In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, significant manpower changes (e.g., workforce migration) and advancements (e.g., transition to NGEMR) have reshaped the landscape of healthcare. Consequently, nursing students may encounter a distinct set of challenges as they begin their clinical education. As we endeavor to support and educate the upcoming generation of nurses, it becomes crucial to grasp the essence of the 'new normal' within clinical settings. In this study, our team Ying Lau Lau Lydia Han Shi Jocelyn Chew 邱涵詩, RN, PhD and Khairul used a distributed cognition qualitative perspective to examine final year nursing students' towards the new normal in clinical practice. While no singular new challenges emerged, our findings underscore the need to prioritize the enhancement of students' well-being during their transition from classrooms to hospitals. We would like to welcome like-minded individuals who are interested in curating psychological and physical wellbeing programs to connect and share their experiences :) Here is a link to the article: https://lnkd.in/gQYMZxqW

In the nursing world, “transition to practice” and “bridging the gap between theory and practice” are frequently used to describe the progression from academia into practice and the disconnect many new nurses experience when comparing their didactic knowledge and the actual practice setting. WHO knew? I had no idea nursing was not designated a STEM field. This means nursing does not get access to millions of dollars in grants designated for enhancing STEM research, education and careers. How can this be? "Nurses utilize scientific principles, mathematical concepts, and cutting-edge technology to conduct assessments, make diagnoses, and plan the care of patients. They employ evidence-based interventions to address illnesses, sustain human life, and, ultimately, assess the outcomes of the care delivered to patients." Two Philly nurses are leading a mission to change this nationally. https://lnkd.in/etdtJccU What do you think? Should nursing be designated a STEM field? I say hell yeah and I will be supporting this effort. Please review and share! https://lnkd.in/ePdYyU-4? https://lnkd.in/efRCRCvr #NursingisStem #STEM

In Denver Health’s learning health system, nurses enhance professional practice and improve patient outcomes through evidence-based practices and quality improvement. We are excited to share new nursing research that offers an alternative to traditional block rotation and can accelerate nursing students' readiness for practice. Jama Goers PhD, RN; Kenneth Oja, PhD, RN; Kale Humphrey, MS; and David Mulkey, DNP, RN, CPHQ, CCRN, CHSE have published a study on a novel longitudinal clinical program for nursing students that measured new nurses’ readiness to start their job. The study may be the first examining the impact of a longitudinal clinical program for undergraduate nursing students in the United States. Goers says it well: "These types of programs have been well studied in medical education but not in nursing education. We are glad to be among the first to study such alternatives for nurses at Denver Health and elsewhere.” 🙌 https://lnkd.in/gmmtuQn8 CU College of Nursing #researchexcellence #nursing #learninghealthsystem Denver Health Office of Education

Assistant Professor (tenure track) at Columbia University School of Nursing The Center for Healthcare Delivery Research and Innovations
New pub out led by Alex Hoyt, Jason Lucey and Susan Kelly-Weeder on comparing NPs who start with a DNP vs. NPs who get it later. Not surprisingly, we find NPs who return for a doctorate do more teaching and admin than those who begin their careers with a DNP. Contrary to other studies, we find that that the DNP is making a difference in NP autonomy. Compared with NPs w/o DNPs, NPs who begin with a DNP have: ✅ 62% higher odds of self-employment ✅ 57% higher odds of billing using their own NPI number ✅ 49% higher odds of having their own DEA number This is some of the first large-scale evidence supporting the DNP out of MGH Institute of Health Professions, Columbia University School of Nursing & The George Washington University School of Nursing. https://lnkd.in/gf9jUiPR

Nurturing Critical Thinking in Nursing Students: A Vital Skill for Success In the world of healthcare, critical thinking is not just a valuable skill; it's an absolute necessity. As nursing educators, it's our responsibility to empower our students with this essential tool. Here's why critical thinking is crucial for nursing students and some strategies to cultivate it effectively: ✔Enhancing Patient Care: Critical thinking enables nurses to analyze complex situations, identify potential risks, and make informed decisions swiftly. This leads to better patient outcomes and safety. ✔Problem-Solving: Healthcare is full of challenges. Critical thinking equips nurses with problem-solving abilities, allowing them to adapt to unexpected situations and find creative solutions. ✔Effective Communication: Nurses need to communicate with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals. Critical thinking fosters effective communication by helping students articulate their thoughts clearly and engage in productive discussions. ✔Conflict Resolution: Healthcare settings can be stressful, and conflicts may arise. Critical thinking equips students with the skills to manage conflicts professionally and ethically. Now, let's explore some strategies to foster critical thinking in nursing students: ✔ Case-Based Learning: Use real-life patient cases in your teaching. Encourage students to analyze the situations, ask questions, and propose solutions. ✔Socratic Questioning: Promote the art of asking open-ended questions that require students to think deeply and justify their answers. ✔Reflection: Encourage students to keep reflective journals to document their experiences and thoughts, helping them develop self-awareness and improve their critical thinking skills. ✔Encourage Curiosity: Create an environment that encourages students to ask questions, explore new topics, and seek answers independently. By instilling critical thinking in nursing students, we prepare them not only for their exams but, more importantly, for the dynamic and demanding world of healthcare. Let's equip our future nurses with the skills they need to provide the best possible care to their patients. #nursingeducation #criticalthinking #healthcareinnovators #nursesonlinkedin
