Now I don't have any inside information; however, from my experience, it can be assumed that the deal that Ziggy had with Paramount Pictures had to be a negotiation. As such, choosing a well-known "hot" actor in Kingsley Ben Adir to play Bob Marley isn't selling out; it's smart negotiation. Studios, like Paramount, more than likely have the final say in casting and production to ensure the project is financially viable. Notwithstanding that In a recent "Sunday Morning" interview, Ziggy Marley said when he looked at several actors, Jamaicans included, he saw Kingsley, and he (Kingsley) held his attention.
So when some Jamaicans critiqued the choice of not casting a Jamaican actor for Bob Marley's role, I held off judgment until I saw the movie myself. The verdict? The Marley family, especially Ziggy Marley, made commendable decisions on this movie. The production was stellar, and the inclusion of Jamaican talent throughout the film was a proud moment for me.
