As we approach another Fourth of July, I really encourage you to reflect on what this holiday truly means in today’s America. While we traditionally celebrate our nation’s independence and the ideals of freedom and equality, we must also confront the stark realities that challenge these very principles. We often boast that America is a nation of immigrants, built on the sweat and dreams of those who came seeking a better life. Yet today, we see policies and rhetoric that are decidedly unwelcoming. We seem to have forgotten our own history – a history that includes shameful chapters like the Japanese internment camps during World War II, where American citizens were imprisoned solely based on their heritage. This Independence Day, let’s move beyond the fireworks and barbecues. Let’s reignite the revolutionary spirit that birthed this nation and channel it into creating the America we aspire to be – one that truly stands for liberty and justice for all. #independenceday

Every year on December 20th, International Human Solidarity Day seeks to celebrate the word’s unity in diversity. It’s also a day to raise awareness about the importance of solidarity. Solidarity is defined as an awareness of shared interests and objectives that create a psychological sense of unity. Solidarity also refers to the ties in a society that bind people together as one. According to the United Nations Millennium Declaration, solidarity is among the fundamental values that are essential to international relations. The Declaration also states that global challenges must be managed so that costs and burdens are distributed fairly. This is in accordance with the basic principles of equity and social justice. Each year, we honour #NationalIndigenousHistoryMonth and Indigenous Peoples Day. June is an essential time of reflection for those living and working on the Indigenous lands now known as Canada and locally, the First Nations unceded territories now collectively known as British Columbia. Here are some ways the creative industries in B.C. are foregrounding Indigenous stories, taking action, and providing resources to champion a safe and equitable future for their creators and everyone in these industries. https://lnkd.in/e2-8UvGQ

@UNCTAD_BioTrade joins #IndigenousPeoplesDay celebration. Did you know that 👉there are an estimated 476 million #IndigenousPeoples in the world living across 90 countries. They make up less than 6% of the world's population, but account for at least 15% of the poorest. 🍃🌵🐟Indigenous Peoples are guardians of 80% of the world’s remaining biodiversity in forests, deserts, grasslands and marine environments. ☝Indigenous Peoples are inheritors and practitioners of 5,000 unique cultures and 7,000 languages. UNCTAD has undertaken important work in areas relevant to #indigenouspeoples' issues, particularly in the areas of #BioTrade with special focus in: (1) capacity building and institutional strengthening, (2) research and information, (3) sustainable use of native biodiversity The #BioTrade Principles and Criteria include, inter alia, the recognition and respect for the rights and practices of local and indigenous communities in relation to territory, culture and knowledge. They are key for the survival of #indigenouscommunities, the preservation of #traditionalknowledge and wisdom and the protection of the cultural and linguistic diversity along with the protection of #biodiversity. Let's all mount our efforts to further promote BioTrade as a tool to support #indigenouspeoples, protect #biodiversity and save the #Planet.
Today, we mark #IndigenousPeoplesDay! #IndigenousPeoples are at the forefront of the global struggle for #HumanRights & fundamental freedoms.
