"Black immigrants make up only 8% of all adult immigrants. Nearly half (47%) of Black immigrants—or about 4% of immigrants overall—are from the Caribbean, while about four in 10 (43%) are from sub-Saharan Africa. Most Black immigrants are U.S. citizens (68%), while one in five (21%) has a valid visa or green card. Just about one in 10 (8%) are likely undocumented. There are about 700,000 Haitian immigrants in the U.S. and by the way, around 100,000 of them work in the health care sector. Overwhelmingly, as with all waves of immigrants before them, Black immigrants come to the United States to improve their lives (87%) and their children’s life chances (80%). To accomplish that, most are working (76%). In the case of Haiti, of course, some are fleeing chaos and political instability and have been granted Temporary Protected Status."

The Survey of Immigrants, a collaboration between KFF and The Los Angeles Times, delves into the lives of immigrants, who make up 16% of the adult population in the U.S. This diverse group significantly contributes to the nation's workforce and cultural fabric. Yet, they encounter distinct challenges in their communities, workplaces, and healthcare systems. Despite these obstacles, immigrants are largely optimistic about their futures in America and hold high aspirations for their children's success. Support equal language access to ensure everyone can fully participate in our society. Join us in advocating for a more inclusive future. Founder of Semilla Multicultural | Hispanic Affluence Marketing Strategist | Author | Speaker #CultivateMeaningfulGrowth™
As we celebrate the #joyofculture during #HispanicHeritageMonth, we are reminded of the persistent American sentiment against immigrants, often labeling them as invaders. This sentiment is not new. Those in Springfield, Ohio, who now intimidate hardworking, legal #Haitianimmigrants share a similar migration story—one of coming to a new land in search of a better life, much like the immigrants who once arrived in Ohio. Ohio’s history is deeply shaped by the contributions of various ethnic groups who migrated to the state in search of better opportunities. Over the years, waves of immigrants from countries such as Germany, Poland, and Eastern Europe settled in Ohio’s cities and rural areas, establishing dynamic communities that wove their cultural identities, languages, and traditions into the state’s evolution. These communities not only preserved their heritage but also brought forward unique skills such as glass-blowing and candy-making. “At the beginning of the 20th century, at least 50 percent of Cleveland residents were German,” contributing to the state’s multifaceted cultural landscape. By 1900, over 75 percent of Cleveland’s population was foreign-born. Fast forward to 2024, nationally, Haitian Americans are rising as a powerful and thriving community. According to recent data, over 30% of Haitian Americans hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, a significant increase in educational attainment, with “about a fifth (18.4 percent) of the Haiti-born being high-income, but more than a quarter (26.9 percent) of the US-born are high-income.” Most are employed in healthcare, retail and teaching. Embrace your community’s #joyofculture and #cultivatemeaningfulgrowth together. UnidosUS (@WeAreUnidosUS) recently published their Latino Economic Report tracing the economic journey of the Hispanic community from the pandemic to the present day. The report details the impact COVID-19 and federal relief programs had on the Latino community and lays out an economic agenda to respond to the continued challenges Latinos face. Here are a few key findings from the report that stood out to us. 💵 An UnidosUS poll of Latinos in Arizona, California, and Texas found that 62% had less than $400 in emergency savings, and 35% had no emergency funds set aside at all. Many working-class Latinos have turned to credit cards, payday loans, pawn shops, or other high-interest, high-fee borrowing options to cover their expenses. 💳 Latino workers need access to lower-cost credit to cover unforeseen, emergency expenses or everyday necessities when their incomes fall short. 🤝 Expanding investment in Community Development Financial Institutions that provide low-cost loans, coaching, and technical assistance to small businesses can help working-class Latinos launch and grow businesses such as food trucks, lawncare and more. As an Unidos affiliate that serves low-income immigrants, MAF celebrates UnidosUS (@WeAreUnidosUS) for publishing these important findings that present solutions to the current challenges still faced by the Latino community. With increasing immigration, racial diversity, and poverty amidst battles over gentrification in Washington, D.C. suburbs, “The Right to the City” movement is becoming the “The Right to Suburbia” - the title of SBAN Director, Dr. Willow Lung-Amam’s new book. 📖 👏🏾 SBAN is proud to share this new body of research from our Director and bring lessons learned to our network on how communities fight cultural, residential, and small business displacement so they too can benefit from new investments. --- Learn more from the publisher’s summary: “The Right to Suburbia investigates how marginalized communities in the suburbs of Washington, DC—one of the most intensely gentrifying metropolitan regions in the United States—have battled the uneven costs and benefits of redevelopment. Willow Lung-Amam narrates the efforts of activists, community groups, and political leaders fighting for communities' "right to suburbia"—that is, their right to stay put and benefit from new neighborhood investments. Revealing the far-reaching impacts of state-led redevelopment, The Right to Suburbia shows how patterns of unequal, racialized development and displacement are being produced and reproduced in suburbs—and how communities are fighting back.”
