So I got a message from a nurse—one of many—but this one really got under my skin. She quit her job to start at a new place, and the day before she was supposed to begin, the DON texted her to say they didn’t need her anymore. A text. No call, no email. Just a cold, impersonal text. So much for hiring. As healthcare leaders, we need to get real. How can we expect someone to put in a two-week notice when we don’t give people the same respect and dignity? This is the same job that’ll be up in arms when a nurse quits without notice. This kind of behavior can’t continue. People have lives, families, and real-life bills to pay. She’ll bounce back because she’s a nurse, but let’s be honest—we’re the ones creating this problem. Every day, I see nurses leaving the bedside, so when you have one willing to work, do everything you can to keep them. I’m sure she dodged a bullet. But we’ve got to do better. And the day before you start, you receive a text saying they don't need you. What would that do to you? How would it affect your mental and physical health? How would it affect those around you? Yes, I'm talking to you! You might be in sales, administration, marketing, data, technology, etc. How would you feel? A similar story is happening every day across the United States. Why?! How have we become so desensitized to the humanity of others that this is a thing? Have you heard of a story like this - or experienced it? I'd love to know.
