Here is What’s on Deck for Me - Week of January 8!   States legislatures in session for 2024: Arizona, Colorado, DC, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Washington State   State legislatures convening this week: Delaware (1/10), Florida (1/9), Georgia (1/9), Illinois (1/11), Iowa (1/9), Kansas (1/9), Maryland (1/10), Michigan (1/11), New Jersey (1/9), North Carolina (1/11), Tennessee (1/10), Virginia (1/10). U.S. Congress is not in session this week, but Speaker of the House Johnson and Majority Leader, Senator Schumer have been working together negotiating a spending deal to keep the government open. It looks like they have come to an agreement.  An agreement must be reached by January 19. This past week, many association leaders and influencers gathered at the 2024 ASAE Annual Meeting & Expo in Cleveland, Ohio. What we learned from ASAE's public policy team left many of us angry and perturbed. Congressional leaders - fueled by think tanks - think it's time to go after nonprofits' tax-exempt status. We must defend the industry - no matter who captures Congress and the White House; associations aren't to blame for the nation's debt. Historically, work in Black and brown communities hasn't received the same recognition, funding, or access to funding opportunities as work done by predominantly white organizations and institutions. This can lead organizations to expect that they won't receive funding, and to even pass up grant opportunities. Getting Grant Ready is an online resource built from years of building capacity directly with community leaders, especially Black and brown leaders, across the country. Now, we need your help to share this with leaders who are doing the work. This year is the 70th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board decision (1954) and its fight for desegregation in schools. While progress has been made, significant challenges remain. Desegregation efforts faced roadblocks, leaving the promise of Brown largely unfulfilled. But the fight for educational equity continues. Simple changes make a huge difference, directly and indirectly. ELMINA B SEWALL FOUNDATION we offer alternatives to a report: sending in a report created for another funder, having a conversation with the program lead, answering 3 to 4 open ended questions, or in some instances, attending a convening or small group conversation with other grantee partners where staff capture themes from the conversation. we want to learn about the field, about the organization as a whole, what opportunities and challenges they seez what trends they see and what they're excited about. we also turn the lens on ourselves as we know one of the few things we can actually control is how we impact our partners. We want to learn how to be a good partner and what else we can do to support our partners as we are committed to their success.

This is very useful.
