An important reminder that the UK is not alone in accelerating an ambitious new hospitals programme. Thanks to Queensland’s Capacity Expansion Program, new life is being breathed into the state’s health infrastructure. As part of the plans, four new hospitals will be unveiled, twelve old ones refurbished, and 2,200 extra beds rolled out by 2028.
The challenges of supporting increasingly complex needs in healthcare services alongside managing ageing assets are at the heart of the programme. They are likewise shared with other global teams grappling with the task of developing fit-for-purpose, state-of-the-art health infrastructure at scale, and at pace.
It’s encouraging to see parallels with and lessons for the UK. They include a growing and solutions-orientated conversation around financial versus carbon cost, as well as a recognition of the potential to move towards a platform approach to design for manufacture and assembly. Overall, the importance of establishing a clear vision, and strong team cohesion through the supply chain, comes across clearly.
