Careers in food science - Food microbiologists: Who are they? What do they do? When you think about a food microbiologist, what image comes to mind? Is it a person in a lab coat staring down a microscope or looking at a Petri dish with questionable microscopic organisms isolated from our food? Even though this traditional image of the food microbiologist still rings true, the role has evolved and is no longer restricted to lab coats and Petri dishes. The 15 Day Content Creation Challenge with Odamea Amoako continues🥳💃 Confronted with a significant challenge in the realm of professional food science, ensuring the safety of a food product by detecting and analyzing potential microbial contamination is key. As an intern in one Food Processing Company, I had the privilege of working in the microbiology laboratory where we performed various microbial analysis like enteros, yeast and Salmonella analysis on the various food products produced by the company to ensure the safety of the food products. I started with just merely following the protocols without understanding the principle behind each step of the protocols, which proved to be difficult. Performing the microbial analysis without understanding the underlying principles behind each step felt like just following a bunch of routines. So rather than merely following the protocol, I chose to transcend the conventional approach of simply following established processes. I took it upon myself to understand the intricacies of each step involved in analyzing foods for microbial presence, and as I did that, carrying out each analysis became more interesting and fun.
