Heimlich Maneuver For Infants And Children
Two days ago I talked about the Heimlich Maneuver as a game changer in case of Choking and focused on the steps for an adult. If you haven't seen it yet you can check it out.
Today let's Look at the steps involved if the victim is a child or an infant.
it's important to note that choking is more prevalent in Children and older people.
For Infants under the age of one, the Heimlich maneuver is modified to be more gentle due to their fragile bodies.
THE STEPS INVOLVED ARE:
💥 Sit down and lay the infant face down on your forearm, with their head lower than their chest.
💥 Support the infant's head and jaw with your hand, ensuring their airway is clear.
💥 Give up to five quick, firm slaps between the infant's shoulder blades using the heel of your hand.
💥 If the object doesn't dislodge, turn the infant over, facing upward, and using two fingers, give up to five quick chest thrusts just below the nipple line.
💥 Repeat these steps until the object is expelled or until medical help arrives.
It's important to be trained in infant CPR and the Heimlich maneuver to perform it correctly and safely.
For children Older than one year of age the Heimlich maneuver is similar to that for adults but with some modifications due to their smaller size.
STEPS FOR A CHILD OVER ONE INCLUDE:
💥 Stand or kneel behind the child, Wrapping your arms around their waist.
💥 Make a fist with one hand, placing it just above the child's navel.
💥 Grasp the fist with your other hand.
💥 Give quick, upward thrusts until the object is dislodged.
It's important to use caution when performing the maneuver to prevent injuries to internal organs.
