What if Monday was the new Sunday? 💡 This is the question many proponents of the four-day work week have been asking themselves for years. In 2024, we can understand the positives and drawbacks of committing to the condensed working schedule. A recent Gallup poll found that workers chose the four-day work week as the policy that has had the biggest positive impact on well-being. Paid mental health days off and restrictions on after-hours work also ranked highly for all employees. However, the 4️⃣ vs. 5️⃣ -day work week could pose issues for some. With the same amount of work to do in a shorter amount of time, employees could subject themselves to overwork and eventual burnout. What do you think about the four-day workweek? Has your company implemented something similar? ⬇ ⬇ ⬇

I'm a big advocate of 4-day workweek. I think it's time we seriously re-think the outdated work habits that go back to the industrial revolution times. With more people struggling with their mental health, realizing that multitasking doesn't bring any benefits and changing their priorities for a better work-life balance, it is evident, that the current system is not sustainable. #4dayworkweek #work #multitasking #dailygrind

A four-day workweek can be a key to reducing burnout and increasing retention, when established along with effective communication, trust among team members and clear goals. As someone who has routinely worked 60+ hour work weeks throughout my career, the idea of a 4-day working week could be dismissed as the predictable demands of those who just don't want to work as hard. In reality, so much has changed with regards to the intensity of work for knowledge workers, that many are struggling to get through a 5-day working week. I find myself completely exhausted, often needing a day to recover. We have to.process so much information, much more quickly than we have ever done, overloading our internal systems every day. Without sufficient time to reset and rebalance, the stresses and strains slowly but surely build up, eventually causing fatigue, which in turn becomes a structural failure - burnout. Productivity over 4 days with 3 days to rest will likely be higher than over 5 days, and more importantly it will be sustainable. The intensity of our work will continue to increase, so the only alternative to reducing the load on our internal systems is a total collapse. As one of the contributors to the article says - "It cost nothing, it's a no-brainer!".
Four-day workweeks don't have to hurt productivity. Ask these companies.

Here's another article on the 4-day work week. In 2022, 8% of full-time workers said they worked four days per week. While this article from The Associated Press says that four-day-workweeks cut down on burnout, I have seen mixed results on this. And anecdotally, what I hear from most is that flexibility is key - some weeks might make more sense than others for a 4-day week. #benefits #commute #burnout #workers #work #jobs https://lnkd.in/e2FiFCjp

Could a 4-day work week be a game-changer? 🤔 If you're aiming to attract top talent, it just might be! Considering the rising prevalence of burnout and mental health struggles, perhaps all companies should give this serious thought. Given the ever-increasing demands of the modern world and the mounting pressure on individuals, isn't it something that could benefit both employees and employers alike? Granted, it may require some courage on the part of businesses, but when you weigh the potential of attracting the best candidates by offering a condensed work week, is it a risk worth taking? So, what are your thoughts on giving this a try? Could it work for "most" businesses? #4dayworkweek #worklifebalance #modernworkplace

71% of employees who were involved in a four-day work week trial reported reduced levels of burnout and less fatigue, anxiety and sleep issues. Company revenue also increased by 1.4% on average and employee turnover decreased by 57%. If you do a four-day work week trial and you see the positive effects it has on your employees, do you really care how much your team is working or do you care about the results they are delivering? Every healthy leader would choose to care about the results over the number of hours their team works. A normal leader just wants to see their team get the job done. It would take a lot to convince most businesses to go for this change, but some companies are already embracing this schedule. What do you think? I help data leaders to become authentic and growth oriented | Authentic Leadership Coach & Co-Founder | New Work Practitioner | Data & Cloud Advisor | Speaker | Dr. rer. nat.
Great summary by Ken Coleman and happy to confirm his numbers on working on a 4-day work week model. I am working on a 4-day work model for 15 years. (I also tested 3-day work model for 2 years). I had a successful management career with working 4-days and I co-founded our own company on a 4-day work week model. It works, and my life is an amazing mix of freedom, family, business, growth, sports, and joy. I can confirm the numbers: My teams always had a very low turnover, my teams had been always more efficient than other teams in the company, we really had stress and a very low number of sick days. A lot of my peers were wondering why this is the case. It took me some time to understand, that the 4-day work model is one essential driver for this. I am a bit concerned about all the messaging around 4-day work week TRIALs! If you do something for 3, 6 or 12 months people are motivated and focused to be successful on this. They also see a big benefit of having one additional free day. The real challenges are coming if you are doing it forever. You can not keep the momentum with rules and processes. It requires a real mind-shift. Keep on going - looking forward for more 4-day work week companies. #4dayworkweek #noburnout #freedem #newwork #leadership
