WEA is a leader in #streetmedicine care models to serve the unsheltered homeless. Because HIV/AIDS and homelessness are intricately related, our integrated primary care and behavioral health model focuses on prevention and treatment for people HIV through a syndemic framework. Join us to learn more at TODAY'S Kentucky Annual AETC Conference! Take the opportunity to join this virtual event with WEA CEO Tyler B. Evans, MD, MS, MPH, AAHIVS, DTMH, FIDSA and Street Medicine pioneer, Dr. James Withers, for "Taking HIV care to the streets: How street medicine meet the unsheltered homeless where they're at". https://lnkd.in/dgX3s5GM

Today is World AIDS Day and I want to take this opportunity to discuss a little bit of the history of HIV in the US as well as discuss current barriers to care. The history of HIV/AIDS is buried from social memory by a polite society that didn’t want to have to deal with a “gay disease”. It’s been buried by families who would rather lie on an obituary than acknowledge their child’s authentic life and authentic self. It has been buried by a lack of protection from discrimination in the 80’s and 90’s which led to lack of access to healthcare, left people unable to care for their partners in their dying moments, createdjob loss, houselessness, violence, and ostracism. It has been buried by a society that put people on live tv to say “it’s killing all the right people”. It has been buried and all people but especially those in the healthcare profession are responsible to uncover the history and reckon with the harm we allowed and the harm we continue to do. In the following photo pack please find the Denver principles and San Francisco principles to begin to get an idea of the strength of long-term survivors, and the historic and current barriers that healthcare providers must be accountable for in order to protect the rights of our long-term survivors #worldaidsday

The recent 1-year extension of #PEPFAR falls short of what is needed to continue American leadership on the global effort to end AIDS worldwide by 2030. Politics has no place with PEPFAR. It has seen broad bipartisan support by 4 Presidents and 10 Congresses. PEPFAR has saved more than 25 million lives and enabled 5.5 million babies to be born free of HIV. We need to prioritize saving lives. We look forward to working with partners to secure a 5-year PEPFAR extension next March 2025.
