Facing a skills gap in your engineering project? When an engineering project demands expertise or experience that we don't have internally, it's crucial to approach the challenge strategically. One of the first steps I take is to identify the specific skills or knowledge we lack. This clarity helps in determining whether we need a short-term consultant, a long-term hire, or even a strategic partnership with another firm. In my experience, leveraging external consultants can be incredibly effective. For instance, during a recent project, we needed advanced knowledge in AI algorithms, which was beyond our team's current capabilities. By bringing in a specialist, we not only filled the immediate gap but also facilitated knowledge transfer to our internal team. This approach ensures that we build our internal capabilities while meeting project deadlines. Another strategy is to foster partnerships with universities or research institutions. These collaborations can provide access to cutting-edge research and emerging talent. For example, partnering with a local university allowed us to tap into their robotics expertise, which was instrumental in overcoming a significant technical hurdle. How Engineers Survive Automation Society? As the more artificial intelligence and robotics govern the world, the more knowledge based jobs in law, medical, account and information technology and simple repeating technical jobs, replaceable by computer or machine will diminish. However, we might have ignored the important premise the energy resources available for humankind (solar, renewable energy, fossil fuels and foods) is limited, not enormous. As climate change now impacts on world weather patterns, uneven water availability (drier for dry regions and wetter for wet regions) and consequent decreases of food crop productions and destabilized politics and retrogress of human rights becomes real. Thus, engineer roles will become more and more important to solve these imminent challenges and unprecedented real threats effectively and in a quick way. My definition of engineer is a person able to bridge between real nature (environment) and human prosperities. Thus, engineers should know the first principles of basic sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, and geology). AI and robotics are kinds of final products, experimented and upgraded by many engineers’ trial and errors, not programmable by few software geeks. Thus, the engineers who know many other fields beside his/her expertise will contribute to the meaningful progress of AI and robotics. Engineers should pursue sustainable developments compatible to both environment and human society. We already learned retrofitting of clean environment and eco-system is very slow and difficult while ruining of the system is very quick and easy. At last but not least, engineers should be independent in providing his/her professional opinions in new system developments or decision of a new policy. Not by politics or personal favor/interest, but purely based on professional experiences on the matter and scientific approaches on the solutions. Thus, engineer should retain capability, skillset or personal tools to prove authenticity of his/her own engineering judgement, not dependent on capital oriented commercial software. #engineering #roles #AI #robotics #automation #sustainability
