How can clinicians ethically integrate psychedelic medicines when treating mental health? That question is at the core of a consensus report published in June by JAMA Network Open. The answers were developed during a 2023 multidisciplinary meeting of experts and interested parties, who came to a consensus on 20 key points across five ethical issues. I was honored to represent ORTUS Foundation at this 2.5-day meeting. This is both a hopeful and crucial moment in the history of mental health. Clinicians and policymakers must take the challenges ahead seriously. We must also keep focus on the rich cultural histories and traditions that inform contemporary medical uses of psychedelic medicines. Representation and inclusivity will help illuminate an equitable path forward. Read the full consensus report: https://lnkd.in/dbwAG_x7

Dr. Sandison confesses that when she first heard Dr. Dale Bredesen talk about his work reversing cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease she was skeptical. But when she started to apply the Bredesen principles in her clinical work and saw just how meaningful the improvements were to patients’ symptoms and quality of life, as she puts it: “…how do I do anything else with my life, but basically tell as many people who will listen that this is possible?” She then went on to found the first two residential care facilities for individuals with cognitive decline that are based on the Bredesen approach. She’s published research on her clinical outcomes and is continuing to gather more data for publication. The information and inspiration she shares are relevant to anyone dealing with cognitive decline, caring for someone with cognitive decline, or even those of us who want to preserve and optimize cognitive function as we move through life. I found her report that environmental toxins were one of the most common findings among her patient population illuminating. 💯 + If psychotherapy doesn't integrate with a wise sociopolitical consciousness (e.g. by exploring ways to ally with activism and social justice advocacy), therapy can easily become a site where folks are encouraged to adapt to their oppression. #mentalhealth #political #activism #advocacy #socialjustice #psychotherapy

If we know from a wide stock of clinical research in the fields of sociocultural trauma, neurodevelopmental wellness, K12 school education and public health milieus (including the DSM-5-TR inventory) that inflammation and oppression are inextricably linked and conversely inflammation and most non-genetic based diseases are linked...then oppression itself is at the nucleus of our illness and ultimate demise. Coercing marginalized folx to adapt to an inherently and developmentally toxic society (or as Dr. MLK called it a "burning house") is like rearranging chairs on the deck of the Titanic. #systemschange #healingorganized #traumainformed #humancentered #restorativejustice #transformativeJEDI
