Before Marty Bonick was ringing the opening bell on the NYSE, these words were ringing in his ears: “Always do the right thing.” In our podcast, “You Can’t Do It Alone,” Marty shared about a mentor who left him pearls of wisdom that he now passes on. He worked closely with Jim Harvey, the long-term CEO of Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His advice was always simple and often profound, like "always do the right thing." “There are so many temptations these days to cut corners, to look for the easy way out, to make the quick buck. We’re working with people’s lives in healthcare, and there’s not always an easy solution…sometimes the right thing isn’t the easy thing,” Marty told us. Listen to the full interview below. And congratulations to Marty for leading a successful IPO for Ardent Health.

How do you ensure that your practice not only survives but thrives, long after you've stepped back? This week's episode of the Medical Money Matters podcast is about creating a legacy, something that stands the test of time and continues to impact the community positively. So, why is succession planning so important in a medical practice? It's about continuity and legacy. Without a clear plan, your practice could face uncertainty or decline after you retire. Succession planning ensures that the quality of care and the business health of the practice are maintained. It’s not just about who will take over, but also about preserving the values and quality of care that have been the hallmark of your practice. The first step is selecting an heir apparent or two or three. What should physicians look for in a potential successor? It's crucial to look beyond clinical expertise. The ideal successor should have what we call "business owner DNA." This includes leadership skills, a deep understanding of the healthcare industry, and a strong business acumen. It’s also about finding someone who aligns with the practice's vision and values. They need to be someone who can not only maintain but also build upon the legacy that you’ve created over many years. In the context of current events, there are two fundamental questions that every plan sponsor should be able to answer about their PBM arrangement. Justin Venneri and I walk through both of these questions (and more) in this week's episode of the Astonishing Healthcare podcast.
When it comes to understanding what drives behavior and cost savings in the #PBM industry, few people are as attuned to #plansponsors' needs and experiences as Josh Golden. We loved having him on the Astonishing Healthcare #podcast today to discuss key questions plan fiduciaries should ask their PBMs, how lawsuits and legislative efforts could drive change in the industry, GLP-1s, and more. Today we're thrilled to be here with you for a very special episode of the Medical Money Matters podcast. This marks our 100th episode! Yes, we’ve hit a milestone, and we just want to take a moment to thank all of you, our loyal listeners, for tuning in, sharing feedback, and helping us grow this incredible community of healthcare professionals and administrators. It’s been an amazing journey, filled with insightful conversations and plenty of learning along the way. And on that note, given that we’re here in our 100th episode, we are drawing some timeless wisdom from Benjamin Franklin. You’ve probably heard the old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” That quote is attributed to him, and it holds as much relevance today as it did back then—especially when it comes to running a successful medical group. Now, while Franklin may have been talking about fire prevention, the message is clear: It’s always better—and often more cost-effective—to prevent problems before they arise rather than scrambling to fix them after the fact. And that’s what we’re going to explore today—how proactive, preventive strategies can protect your practice, improve patient outcomes, and ultimately save you money and stress in the long run.
