Passion helping individuals and families coping with co-occurring mental illness and substance use issues
Whilst reducing access to alcohol will help we need to invest in more inclusive and skilled programs within AOD to address those with alcohol use issues and who use violence
We know what works to reduce harm from alcohol. Yesterday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged the link between alcohol and domestic and family violence, but commented that the solutions to alcohol-related violence "are not simple" and "We need to make sure that we put in place measures that do make a difference." It is true that addressing domestic and family violence requires a multi-faceted approach. But when it comes to preventing and reducing harms from alcohol, the evidence is clear around what measures make a difference. Action includes addressing predatory alcohol marketing, as we know alcohol companies collect the personal data of their biggest customers so they can bombard them with tailored advertising enticing them back again and again. We also need to address the cheap alcohol that fuels harm. Our policy platform, "Working together to prevent harm from alcohol in Australia: Opportunities for action", clearly outlines five areas for the Federal Government to take action to address alcohol: https://lnkd.in/g8NeQH4m Introducing these measures would go a long way to improving the health and wellbeing of all Australians. https://lnkd.in/gS_3Ane9

Many Kenyans affected by alcohol harm - either directly or indirectly. The negative impact is evident, with 40% of Kenyans expressing grave concern over the link between alcohol-related harms and domestic violence within households. Additionally, 28% of Kenyans are alarmed by the strong link between alcohol consumption and car crashes. These figures emphasize the urgent need to address the pervasive and multifaceted dangers of alcohol, reinforcing the call for more stringent alcohol control measures. We welcome the action announced in the King's Speech around smoking and the harms of tobacco, but more must be done about the harms of alcohol. The announcement of the Tobacco and Vales Bill is excellent - creating a smokefree generation is vital to protect the next generations from the harm of cigarettes - a product that kills 2 in 3 users. We saw great progress with the bill earlier this year and are so pleased to see the new government also making it a priority. We are encouraging the new government to think similarly about the harms of alcohol. Alcohol currently costs England £27.4bn annually and alcohol-related deaths are rising - the best way to protect health, the economy and the NHS is to take decisive action to reduce the harm caused.

There was also a discussion about the UK Govt moves here on RadioNZ Morning Report today: https://lnkd.in/gQ2YiNH9 Interesting that UK Government prioritises introducing measures to protect future generations from vaping and smoking whilst by contrast NZ Coalition Govt intends to abandon three key measures (denicotinisation of tobacco products, substantial reductions in retail supply and smokefree generation policy on sales to young people) already in place in our smokefree legislation that would have ensured future generations were virtually smokefree.

It's Alcohol Change UK's Awareness Week 2024. As part of Alcohol Awareness Week, we want to help you gain a deeper understanding of alcohol testing and some of the phrases we regularly use. Today's term is: Ethyl Palmitate (EtPa) The alcohol marker EtPa is a by-product produced by the body after the consumption of alcohol. In contrast to EtG, EtPa is produced throughout the body whereas EtG is produced via the liver. April is Alcohol Awareness Month! This month-long observance is dedicated to raising awareness about the risks of excessive alcohol consumption and promoting healthy habits and behaviors. The goal is to educate individuals and communities about the dangers of alcohol misuse and the resources available for those who may be struggling with alcohol-related issues. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, alcohol use is a leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. Healthcare professionals can support recovery in a number of ways: 1. Help patients identify their support people. Who in their lives will stand in solidarity with them as they go through the recovery process? Different people will offer different types of support, and the variety of help will make an enormous impact on the process. 2. Help patients identify realistic goals, emphasizing future-oriented values. Encouraging abstinence from alcohol is the recommended route, but there are negotiated treatment steps that make sense for some patients. This #AlcoholAwarenessWeek we are understanding alcohol harm. Despite the best efforts of dedicated services, staff and volunteers the numbers are stacking up. Alcohol specific deaths are on the rise and many people in need are still not in treatment. But there is only so much limited resources can give you. There are so many pressures for frontline workers and limited resources which don’t often support the way we would like to work. That is why funding of services is so important. For those who have or continue to work in treatment, we all know the uncertainty that shorter contracts bring on the ground and the disruption for staff and service users leading up to and during times of change. It’s time we stop asking services to do more with less. That is why we need funding models which allow services: ✅ enough resources and support to deliver flexible models of care for longer periods of time, ✅ protected time for regular supervision and training, ✅ time to develop and deliver joined up care with other services, ✅ to deliver early intervention and prevention, and ✅ time to work with their communities to understand local need and develop local collaborative solutions. This is just one way we can help to reduce alcohol harm and there are many more things we can do. Check out our website for more information 👇🏻 https://lnkd.in/eUHzZeCD
