Never Underestimate the Power of a Good Induction! ⚡ Having spent 15 years as a Learning and Development trainer, I've come to deeply appreciate the true value of induction training for new joiners. I've learned that induction training goes beyond merely teaching the basics; it's about igniting engagement and motivation right from the outset. When new team members receive thorough guidance and encouragement from day one, they're more likely to step into their roles with confidence and a sense of empowerment. Through the years in this role, I've witnessed how a well-thought-out induction programme can do wonders for morale, job satisfaction, and ultimately, staff retention rates.

Cross training is a win-win-win situation. Trained employees win because they feel valued, the trainers win because they have had an opportunity to share their expertise, and the organization wins because employee satisfaction has increased and continuity of service has been enhanced. - Leslie Gordan There are many benefits to cross training including retention of institutional knowledge, employees feeling valued, boosting productivity, and improving capacity. Work coming to a screeching halt because one person goes on vacation, maternity leave, or exits the organization has a cost, not only to the company but to the employees. How are you investing in cross training your team members?

How to make adult facilitator-led training worth it on new staff 💁♀️ I was lucky to be part of an incredible team, designing onboarding training from scratch. We co-created and used the following guidelines: Guided-discovery activities - We avoided 'teaching' then 'assessing'. Instead we created activities to guide participants to discover and make connections between concepts. This supports participants to 'own' their learning. Design for the performance outcomes - We created opportunities for participants to practice on-the-job tasks in a safe environment, making the conditions as close as possible to their daily responsibilities. Gagne's first principle of instruction - 'Ensure the learners are ready to learn and participate in activities by presenting a stimulus to capture their attention.' We started every session by stimulating engagement via media, stories, competitions, etc.

Thinking about my first staff training, I cringe a ton. We spent hours on a video outlining all the summer’s themes. Even doubled down and brought out all the directors in costumes dressed as every theme. Yikes. No one listened. And if they cared, it wasn’t much. People don’t often get excited about watching someone else’s ideas. They get pumped to put their own energy into action. Now, when we start staff training, we turn it over to the staff as quickly as possible. Get them excited, then get them moving What’s the first thing you do to start staff training?
