Several administrative teams in Orleans County, NY, were spread across different physical spaces, some of which were no longer sufficient for their needs. Our team worked with the county to design a civic structure that would consolidate these departments while upholding the principles and sensibilities of the population of Orleans County. We provided architectural, engineering, energy efficiency, and construction management services for the 23,000-square-foot addition to the primary administration building. Last Friday, Davis Partnership Architects was proud to join the City of Boulder and the greater Boulder community to celebrate the grand opening of Fire Station #3. Davis Partnership Architects is honored to serve the unique needs of first responders, providing efficient and inspiring designs that also meet strict budgets funded by taxpayer dollars. Boulder Fire Station #3 is designed to improve response coverage to a rapidly growing community while delivering an iconic design that celebrates the dedication and bravery of our first responders. The 22,000 sf fire station and 6000 sf of supporting administration space integrates sustainability and flexibility into its design, exceeding Boulder’s Climate Action Goals and resulting in a 100-year building to serve the community’s needs far into the future. It's also home to one of the nation's first electric fire trucks, soon to be joined by a sister vehicle! Boulder Fire Station #3 is an all-electric facility. The expansive and distinctive roof protects the station, which is stepped back below the canopy. It serves as a beacon of safety while also maximizing opportunities for photovoltaics. The station’s PV system is estimated to offset approximately 65% of its annual electric consumption, according to energy models. Embodied carbon was reduced by reusing reclaimed steel from the decommissioned Boulder Community Hospital in the steel columns. Congratulations to the city of Boulder, Boulder Fire and the entire design and construction team including ME Engineers, KL&A Engineers and Builders, and Martin/Martin, Inc, and our many other consultants, as well as Mark Young Construction, LLC and their team. Today I'm reporting from AIA SV's Architectural Intelligence Conference. I'm sitting in a room full of licensed architects learning about housing hurdles. I'm covering "Reimaging The Future of Housing In a Changing World" by Caroline Souza, Principal, at David Baker Architect, and Veronica Reck, Studio Director at Gensler Insurance doubled from 2020 in 5 years. About Single-Use District v. Multi-use Districts, this is happening to SF (ghost city) in the original single-use district. The 4th and Market Street Bank building "Humboldt" will use Pearl House as a model from NYC. This is carbon saving without using new building materials for housing conversion. The "Design that Supports Memory Care" in Oakland is a good example. Environmental Justice (EJ) involves vulnerable sites. The air quality index (PM 2.5) in Oakland during the campfire in Nov 2018 harmed EJ. Architects also study Food Justice, Behavioral Health, and Biosphere. If anyone implements battery storage in a housing project, you are eligible for $25 million in funding. Mass timber creates less carbon than steel and concrete: (1) Reduces building foundation, (2) increases the speed of construction (25%+), and (3) reduces labor force onsite. "Breaking Rules" is possible like lifting the strict parking requirement.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: Wentworth Douglas Hospital | Portsmouth, NH If one could choose a word to describe the primary advantage of #thinbrick #precast #solutions in commercial design, it would be #efficiency. Virtually every new construction project is up against time and weather hurdles, which is exactly where thin brick becomes most efficient. For the Wentworth Douglas Hospital, an accelerated schedule combined with winter in New England meant a product would need to be utilized to overcome these practical challenges. This is precisely how thin brick in precast construction is so effective as architects are able to achieve the look of a beautiful mix materials façade, while providing smart solutions for project engineers and managers.
