For SYLVAIN, 2023 was a year of devastating loss, hard questions—and a renewed sense of purpose. We embark on 2024 as a company transformed, but more determined than ever to make sure that some things never change. Launching today, our third annual impact assessment, Progress Through Adversity, discusses it all: the highs, lows, lessons, and pivots. Like last year, this assessment is our attempt to hold ourselves to the same ethical and social standards we expect of our clients. I used to call myself a reformed marketer and I accomplished a lot at Sustainable Brands, most recently serving as SVP of Revenue until that role was eliminated today. “Purpose” is getting a bad rap these days. It’s been co-opted by ignorant people pushing an anti-woke agenda for political gain. It’s been seized by corporations as a veneer for marketing and PR to paint over their unethical business practices and negative environmental impacts. And it’s been evangelized to the point that acolytes believe it’s the only way to save the world. (That last statement may upset a few people, but we really do need a reality check). Being a purpose-led business these days is hard. Not do enough and you’ll get criticized. (In some cases, fair enough, but remember that purpose is a journey). Do too much and you’ll be called out for virtue signaling or being too righteous. Contrary to Milton Friedman's notion that profit is the ultimate goal of business, I believe that sustainable profits emerge as a natural byproduct of organizations deeply rooted in their mission and committed to serving all stakeholders. The future belongs to purpose-led enterprises. They weave a narrative of social and environmental responsibility into their operations, and embed positive impact into their business model. They understand that establishing legitimacy in the eyes of society necessitates a passionate dedication to creating value for everyone involved. They create businesses that intertwine and elevate purpose, profit, and people. Imagine a world where every business is driven not just by the commercial imperative to be profitable, but by a profound sense of purpose? → Employees find fulfillment in their work → Customers experience products and services that genuinely enrich their lives → Investors see sustainable returns that transcend short-term speculation. This isn't just a utopian vision or marketing BS. By adopting a purpose-led approach, businesses not only thrive financially but also become the catalysts for positive social and environmental change.
