We’ve seen incredible societal evolution over the years, and we continue to do so: Society 1.0 Hunger & Gatherer Era Society 2.0 Agrarian Era Society 3.0 Industrial Era Society 4.0 Information Era Society 5.0 Impact Era How does this affect workplace wellbeing and employee wellness? Well, in society 4.0, we focused on giving information, showing up for a talk or feeding employees an app with content on and job done ✅ (box ticked 🙄). We know now that, alone, isn’t going to create lasting change, although it’s still better than previous. So what do we need in society 5.0 to make a real impact? In my eyes we need: To become wellbeing-centered NOT wellbeing-driven. Wellbeing-driven implies we’re focused on ‘pursuing’ a state of wellbeing. Wellbeing-centered implies we’re revolving what we do, around a state of wellbeing. One is ‘experiencing’ and the other is ‘getting ready to’. One is integrating an ever changing landscape. Here's a closer look at what different generations might value in workplace wellbeing but, please remember, this is just a rough guide and everyone is different: Gen Z: This generation may value work-life balance, mental health support, and flexibility. With a tech-savvy approach, they may appreciate digital wellness tools and mental health resources they can access on their terms. Millennials: Flexibility is key for Millennials, too, but they may also prioritise personal growth and development. Providing meaningful work and opportunities for professional development can significantly boost their sense of wellbeing. Gen X: Known for resilience and independence, Gen X often values financial security and practical benefits. They may seek wellness options that protect their financial and physical health, like retirement planning support and healthcare benefits. Baby Boomers: Social connections and loyalty to the workplace are highly valued. Offering programs that promote community and a sense of purpose like mentorship or group activities can often resonate deeply with them. The Value of Multi-Generational Teams When we embrace the varied needs of each generation, we create a healthier, more engaged workplace for everyone. Multi-generational teams drive innovation, but it’s crucial that we recognise and support their unique wellbeing needs. Understanding these differences isn’t just beneficial; it’s essential for sustainable, inclusive growth.
