⚡️⚡️ Great tips to up your networking superpowers and continue the conversation later 👇🏻💡

When it comes to networking, a trade show is one of the best places to strike up a conversation. Everyone is there to learn, connect and grow their businesses….with only a few days to do it. It is a great place to connect with those you have been trying to get a hold of, as well as those you need to get a hold of. These are the decision makers. The movers and shakers who may ultimately decide to purchase your product. All you need to be is engaged and prepared. A few tips to prepare for those networking opportunities: 1.       Know your objective. Who do I want to meet and why? 2.       Think about who are the best to connect with and how you will do it? Social function? Education session? Booth interaction? Restaurant? Mutual introduction? 3.       Perhaps you can arrange a meetup before the event. Talk up the show and let them know you will be there. If you can get access to the delegate list, run through it to see who is going. 4.       Prepare some good conversation starters and questions to generally and specifically ask depending on who you are talking to. The could be industry ones or company specific. 5.       Keep a small notebook handy or set up a folder on your phone to document summaries of conversations that you need to expand on at a later date 6.       I know business cards may seem archaic, but still have a few on you at any time. Some like them, some don’t but be ready for those who do 7.       When wrapping up a conversation or meeting, give your thanks for their time and insight. Do it again after the event as a way to not only reiterate your appreciation but perhaps initiate further discussion. 8.       Always have an ace up your sleeve. Sometimes the conversation will go its own way and you may need something good to add to the conversation whether that is some new industry knowledge or something that your company is looking into doing that could be a bit or a game changer. Be prepared. See you at the show!  

I’ve seen a trend where people seek transactional networking, but are unwilling to invest time & energy into building genuine relationships or community. If you think about it, networking is just building relationships that hopefully turn into friendships. All relationships are based on mutual trust & respect, which take time & energy to develop. Yesterday, I went to a podcast recording where Justin Wolz interviewed Andrew Yeung on building a community from 0. Here are some of the takeaways I took: - Find 3 ways in how you can help someone. It could be connecting them with another person, sending them events to attend or sharing a podcast/ article you think they will benefit from.  - If you are posting online, give your audience what they want. Engage with everyone in your comments & comment on other’s post.  - Start hosting URL meet ups, then move to IRL events. Make sure you figure out why people are coming to your event.  - And most importantly, any event you host should be an extension of your personality! There are 2 main mistakes Andrew believes people make it hosting events:  1. Not knowing why you are hosting the event, and  2. Monetizing the event too early. I used to host a lot of events when I was running my catering business, but I stopped after 2020 as it became too draining. But I’ve been thinking about hosting other events soon in NYC. Why you should listen when someone throws a crazy idea at you … If you’re the type of person who immediately dismisses what they say you could be missing out on something really good! Ask yourself if you would have taken a chance on this one. Here’s what happened … A woman I had met quite by chance told me about her idea. “Tried it before, small scale” she said. “It was very popular and I’ve often thought of bringing it into U.K. cities but I’m too nervous” Curiosity piqued! I pressed her for the details…. “Well it’s this thing that’s a bit like a mini trade show but it’s also a networking event and it’s also got a bit of fun built in”. It goes like this … • Very few stand holders – not too much competition for them. • No overlapping talks/networking taking punters away from them. • Networking that is properly facilitated so that it works • Only one short talk and it has to be USEFUL • Food glorious food • On the day special offers/discounts for everyone The most unique bit? A mechanism to ensure that all the visitors visit every stand and SPEAK to the stand holder! That same mechanism puts everyone into a prize draw to win a great prize. AND it’s all affordable. I’m in! Didn’t regret it. I am going to a networking event today. Here is how I am preparing: ⓵ I have an objective. Always go into networking with an objective. How do you want to exchange energy with others from a place of giving? My objective is about what I can GIVE at the event. My intention is to spread the word about The Rich Thinking Conference coming up in Philadelphia September 6th and YES, I want to sell tickets. So, isn’t that “taking?” No. I know the value of this event far exceeds what I can give. I know the people attending that day will receive something incredible in exchange for their ticket purchase. I know that I am giving far more than I am getting. 🫢 If you think selling your services is “taking,” you aren’t going to sell very much. What you have to offer has great value and those who purchase it are LUCKY to have it. They will be better for it. Believe this. ⓶ I have good questions ready. Small talk and standard lines are stagnant. Go into networking with crisp, vibrant questions that show people you care about the answers and you are a deep thinker. If you want to stand out as a thought leader, and be remembered, you have to demonstrate that you consider things at a different level from most people they will meet at the event. My questions are all related to my objective. I will ask people things like: 🤔 When was the last time you attended an event with speakers that lit you on fire? 🤔 What could someone say to you that would motivate you to want to be better? 🤔 What kind of inspiration do you need in your business right now? 🤔 What makes an event amazing in your opinion? 🤔 Who’s your favorite motivational person? So how do you segue to questions like this without engaging in banal small talk first? Start out with something that you notice or admire about the person like: 👔 Great shirt! I wasn’t sure how to dress for this event. Good choice! I’m Mitzi. I’m here because… 👯 I see you know “Susan.” That’s a great connection! I know her from x. I’m Mitzi. I’m here because… 🍤 How is that “food item?” I was going for that next. I’m Mitzi. I’m here because… ⓷ Get contact information. I have a digital flyer showcasing The Rich Thinking Conference so I can share it on the spot! But I’ll want to follow up with folks afterwards. If you can, make some quick notes about the people you meet so you can have a reference point to help them remember you later! If you are trying out networking events for the first time this year, here are some tips on how to get the most out of them: 1️⃣ Before you attend an event, consider what do you want to get out of the meeting? Think of one or two outcomes you would like to achieve. 2️⃣ Introduce yourself to the event organisers as they can then help introduce you to other attendees. 3️⃣ If you enjoyed a particular networking event keep going to it! This will help you to build relationships with the other attendees and get your brand known amongst the group which can lead to them recommending your offering to their other connections. 4️⃣ Take notes! If you are someone that needs to write things down to remember them (names, company details, follow up actions) don’t feel like you can’t write that down whilst you are at the meeting. 5️⃣ The follow up after the event is key. After the meeting, send each person you met an email to consolidate the connection. Connect with them over LinkedIn and other social platforms.   🐝P.S. Everyone is already in tight circles when you walk into the event room. Their backs are facing out, making it difficult to introduce yourself. “Fine”, you think. “I’ll grab a seltzer from the bar” because a group of people are over there. You are relieved! “This is where I will make connections!” Everyone asks you what you are drinking, and when you respond “Seltzer,” they are so bored by your lack of alcohol that they can barely speak. They stand there stunned, staring at you, blinking. They ran out of questions to ask you, and you them. You leave the bar area. Now, you are awkwardly standing around, trying to avoid looking at your phone and check work emails when, in reality, you would do anything to escape this #networking event. You are not bad at networking. You are just in the wrong place. You are not bad at networking. You just need to find a different group of people. You are not bad at networking. You just need to pre-connect beforehand. You are not bad at networking. You just need to attend an alcohol-free event. You are not bad at networking. You just need to create your own space. You are not bad at networking. You just might prefer 1:1 meet-ups. You are not bad at networking. You just need to find a style that works for you. People need to be reminded, not told once. Here’s how to apply this into your networking. You cannot rely on meeting someone once and thinking they’ll remember you when the time comes in the future. Nor will they need what you do the first time you meet them. You need to remind them. This means reconnecting with people you’ve already met at events. As a way to further imprint yourself in the front of their mind. Doing so helps you: - Reconnect with an old connection - Reignite a conversation - Stay front of mind - Become the first person people think of So next event you attend, try this: 1. Review the guest list a day or two in advance 2. Highlight 2-4 people you already know or met previously 3. Make a point at the event to say hi These interactions can be as simple as a quick hello and catch up finding out what they’ve been working on. Yes, networking is about connecting with new people. But it is just as important to reconnect with those you already know. This is what will make you the person people think of, when they think of what you do. P.S. We all love events and the energy, the conversation, the networking and exchanging of cards that comes as a package. The mood at any event is upbeat and gives us a feeling that everyone we met is going to be my next client or we will definitely work together. However, the reality check happens when most of them do not even revert back or connect with you. My Learnings have been that “What others do, I have no control but what I do is in my complete control”. Like everyone else I also met people, had conversations, exchanged cards and networked at the wonderful “WORLD HRD CONGRESS”. Let me share what the high of the event that I came back with: ✅ I saved all the numbers on my mobile. ✅ I saved all the numbers on my excel sheet with brief of the conversation or reference to our meeting as I am 100% sure I will not remember the entire conversation I had with them.  ✅ I wrote a personal email to each of them thanking them for their time, pleasure meeting you and a brief about the work I do.  ✅ I sent them LinkedIn invite (those who were still not connected.  ✅ I sent them a WhatsApp message thanking them and also mentioning that I have sent an email from lokesh@lokeshnathany.com Some of the questions that bothers one and all and that stops many from following the above post event process: ❌ No on responds back only few responded. ❌ They may feel as if I am dying to be connected with them.  ❌ They do not need my services. No point taking the connection forward.  ❌ What if they do not accept my LinkedIn invite. My Questions to you: ❓Do you respond back to everyone that writes to you? ❓Do you feel the same way when others reach out to you? Even if you are dying to build the connection, what is wrong in it? ❓You are building connection or buying or selling instant noodles? ❓Do you accept every invite that you get? Finally should you not be focussing on your own actions and what is in your control and not on other peoples actions. To me Networking is not about looking for instant gratification but a delayed one if at all there is a possibility of one. Be Clear in your mind with the purpose of why are you attending an event. Like I shared in my last post - if 2 out of 4 purposes are ticked, I am happy attending the event.
