TEACHER TIP THURSDAY 🤓 ‘What questions do you have?’ As educators it is in our nature to ask students if they have any questions, particularly at the end of delivering instructions. For many middle school students, this time allowance is a must. However, this wording can come across as an ‘end of discussion’ comment whereby students feel like they can’t ask questions. Simply reframing the wording to ‘What questions do you have?’ produces a sense of wonder, eliciting students musings, thoughts and ideas in a much more open ended forum often giving them space to ask those pressing questions! #teacher #teaching #pedagogy #education

Ah, but why do we have 'grades' in the first place? Secondary students stress about them to get into post-secondary. Post-secondary students stress about them to get to the degree. In the pursuit of competition for a number, many succumb to the temptation to bend or break academic integrity to get the magic number - the meaning of 'life' for them. Once they have a degree, this does serve as a benchmark for certain industries/professions, but then what? If it's only about the paper, and not the actual building of knowledge and expertise, what then? There is the age-old debate about the necessity of grades over practical demonstration of skills/knowledge. As my dad used to always say, "Where did the first expert come from?"

The Chronicle of Higher Education asked professors, “What do grades really mean?” But my hot take is that this is the wrong question. We need to ask what grades mean to STUDENTS. What about the stress, anxiety, perfectionism? Lets address that. Let’s do the work to reimagine teaching and learning in higher education. #pedagogy #highereducation #highered #teachingandlearning

Teacher-directed instruction is equated with a “formal” approach to schooling, which unfavorably contrasts in comparison to the romanticized philosophy of- “Learning through Play” and “Child-centered” education.
