Did you know that every CNYC member building has membership rights in the National Association of Housing Cooperatives? NYC coops and condos have benefited from NAHC's advocacy work for years. This week, Executive Director Mary Ann Rothman is in Vancouver at NAHC's Annual Conference, helping spearhead efforts to have co-ops and condos exempted from the Corporate Transparency Act and to encourage Congress to pass the Disaster Relief Call To Action, which would open #FEMA funding to cooperatives and condominiums. At the current time, co-ops and condos impacted by a presidentially declared natural disaster—flood, wildfire, hurricane, tornado, blizzard, drought, or earthquake—are NOT afforded the same #FEMA recovery resources as single-family homeowners, even though they pay the same federal taxes. H.R. 5337 would create access to FEMA funds to repair or replace essential major common area elements facilities like boiler rooms, elevators, roofs, and outside walls. With climate change and flash flooding affecting more NYC buildings each year, the legislation is needed now.
