🚨 Don't Let Complacency Creep In: A Reminder for Emergency Medical Dispatchers 🚨 As Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs), our role is crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals in need of urgent medical assistance. However, it's easy to fall into the trap of complacency, especially when faced with routine calls or familiar scenarios. Complacency can dull our senses, cloud our judgment, and ultimately compromise the quality of care we provide. That's why it's essential for EMDs to remain vigilant, engaged, and proactive at all times. Every call is unique, and every situation requires our full attention and expertise. By staying sharp, continuously honing our skills, and staying updated on the latest protocols and procedures, we can ensure that we deliver the highest standard of care to those who rely on us during their most vulnerable moments. Let's challenge ourselves to never settle for mediocrity, but instead, strive for excellence in every call we handle. Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of those we serve. #EMD #EmergencyMedicalDispatcher #StayVigilant #ContinuousImprovement #QualityCare #LinkedInFirstResponder

** Ambulance Department ** When calling for emergency medical assistance, a few questions will be asked by the Ambulance Dispatcher. However, having the necessary information beforehand will be a huge help in getting assistance faster. Question such as : What’s the address of the emergency - Giving the exact address, such as the name of the Road/Drive and District. Landmarks are also helpful as well. What’s the phone number you’re calling from - even with the most updated technological advancements known to man, calls do drop/fall out. The ambulance dispatcher cannot call you back if they don’t have your number. Say exactly what happened. Give every detail that you’re able to. Let the Ambulance Dispatcher know if you’re with the patient or passing second/third hand information. How old is the person/s - Even if you do not know the exact age, there is no harm in taking an educated guess. Is he/she breathing - This information is very important and should not be assumed or guessed. To determine if a person is breathing, look to see if their chest is rising and falling, listen over their mouth and nose for breathing sounds or feel their breath against your cheek for 10 seconds. It is better to say you don’t know than give incorrect information. Is she/he awake/conscious: This information is very important and should not be assumed or guessed. To determine if a person is alert/conscious, simply speak to them. If she/he doesn’t respond/answer back, they are not awake/conscious. Tapping or pinching them on their shoulder is necessary as well. Based on the information you provided, more question maybe asked. Always remember, you are the eyes/ears in any emergency medical situation. More information you provide = fewer questions asked.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is inherently focused on the present. In the critical moments of saving lives, thinking about the last patient could distract you from the person lying on the stretcher in front of you right now. Worrying about the next call isn’t helpful when its nature is unknown. Yet, the past holds immense lessons that are vital for our growth and excellence. The experiences of our trainers and the lessons learned from EMS’s earliest days provide a foundation upon which we build our practices and protocols. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first National EMS Week, an opportunity to honor those who came before us. These pioneers challenged the status quo and raised the bar, setting standards that have shaped modern EMS. As we celebrate this milestone, we pay tribute to their courage and innovation. Their legacy is a reminder of the importance of continuous learning and adaptation. In recognizing our history, we also look to the future. The advancements and improvements we strive for today are built on the efforts of our predecessors. It is our responsibility to forge a path for the next generation of EMS professionals, ensuring they are equipped to serve their communities with excellence and dedication. Leadership plays a crucial role in this endeavor. Running EMS organizations effectively requires a deep understanding of both the past and the future. As leaders, we must honor the traditions and lessons of our history while fostering an environment of innovation and progress. By doing so, we ensure that EMS remains a dynamic field capable of meeting the evolving needs of society. As we celebrate this EMS Week, let’s commit to learning from the past and building a brighter future. Let’s honor the trailblazers who paved the way and strive to lead with vision and integrity, ensuring that the legacy of excellence continues for generations to come.

Wow! Emergency Medical Advisors… Answering calls no one wants to have to make. I never fail to be impressed at ambulance service site visits by the calm professionalism of EMAs. Visiting an NHSP trust today was no exception. Click - the call connects. “Is the patient conscious?” ”No!” Immediately the EMA picks up that the patient’s breathing is noisy and irregular*. Managed to get necessary info from a terrified caller fast. Calmly reassuring them that instructions, and help were coming. CPR instructions to someone who’d never done it before and hands on chest in less than a minute. Incredible skills, clear advice and continued encouragement meant that the pt was coughing and making an effort to breathe when the crew arrived. Call ended and 30 s later, click - another call connects. EMAs aren’t always recognised for the amazing work they do. They’re the first port of call in our emergency ambulance services and do a really hard job. Hopefully this call generates another leaf on the Tree of Life wall - where the trust gathers the names EMAs where CPR advice achieves ROSC for the patient. That was just one of many calls they’ll receive today. Find out more about EMAs here: https://lnkd.in/eyYRvVKB *noisy irregular breathing can be a sign of cardiac arrest. Do you know how to recognise it? https://lnkd.in/eiZJDUqf #emergency #ambulance #triage (alt text: image of female emergency services call taker in front of computer screens)

Dear New EMT Colleagues, As you embark on your journey in the noble Emergency Medical Services (EMS) field, I want to emphasize the importance of integrity and honesty in our profession. Every day, we are entrusted with the lives and well-being of those in need, and this responsibility demands the highest ethical standards from each of us. Integrity is the cornerstone of our profession. It means doing what is right, even when no one is watching. As EMTs, our actions directly impact the lives of our patients, their families, and our communities. We must prioritize their welfare above all else, adhering to beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice principles. This means providing care with compassion, respect, and professionalism, regardless of personal biases or external pressures. Honesty is equally indispensable. We must communicate truthfully and transparently with our patients, colleagues, and supervisors. Our patients rely on us to provide accurate information about their conditions, treatment options, and potential outcomes. Any deviation from honesty undermines trust and jeopardizes patient safety and well-being. Let us remember that honesty fosters trust, the foundation of effective healthcare delivery. As you navigate the challenges and uncertainties of your role as an EMT, always keep in mind the ethical principles that guide your profession. Seek guidance and support from experienced mentors, uphold the standards set forth by our code of ethics, and never hesitate to speak up in situations that compromise integrity or honesty. Remember that you are part of a dedicated team committed to serving others in their time of greatest need. In closing, I urge you to embrace integrity and honesty as guiding principles in your practice as EMTs. By upholding these values, you honor the trust your patients placed in you and contribute to the integrity and reputation of our profession. Thank you for being so committed to excellence in emergency medical services.
