Trying to find the right thing to say or do for a friend caring for someone on hospice? We know it can be challenging, and often offers of "let me know if there is anything I can do" go unfulfilled. That's why we've curated a list of practical ways friends and family can offer meaningful support to caregivers during these challenging times. 1️⃣ Make your offer specific: Instead of "Let me know if you need anything," offer a specific task. Examples include, "What day can I bring dinner to you?" or "Would it be helpful if I drove your kids home from school?" Specific offers remove the burden of decision-making and assure the caregiver that the task is within your capabilities. 2️⃣ Remove the need to respond: A secondary burden can be feeling the the need to keep respond. Send a thoughtful text like, "No need to respond, I am just thinking of you." This lets them know you're there without adding another task to their to-do list. 3️⃣ Offer a listening ear: Offer your time and an ear, allowing them to share their thoughts, fears, and emotions without judgment. 4️⃣ Volunteer to sit with their loved one: Offer to spend time with their loved one, allowing the caregiver some much-needed time for self-care and rest. Supporting the dying is a community responsibility. People can and do care for each other in the community particularly when there is a network of caregivers of ordinary people and health professionals working together. 'Compassionate Communities’ is a term often applied to public health palliative care interventions that promote social outcomes such as network enhancement, partnerships between formal and informal organisations, death literacy, and civic engagement. A ‘Compassionate Communities’ approach recognises death and dying as everyone’s business – where the community is an equal partner in the long and complex task of providing quality care at the end of life. When family carers and dying people are supported within an active community, workplace, school, or other civic network, research shows that they feel less isolated and powerless. This is the work of CCAus, to support communities to reclaim and own their central role in caring, dying and grieving.  #CompassionateCommunities

How do I help Families? ~ In SO many ways! I actually starting this series #WhatIDoWednesday in an effort to educate and explain to people what it is that I do. Because when you have created and offer something that is new and different, you need to explain to people exactly what you do. In fact, most of the time when people contact me, they start with, "I'm not sure exactly what you do, I was just told to call you..." Here are a few examples of #whatido: ~ Meet with people to discuss next best steps before their family member comes home from hospital. ~ Work with people to develop a care plan and enhance their #careteam to best support their family member to be safe and well at home. ~ Visit family members of those sons and daughters who live out of province/country but have concern about the health and wellness of their Mom and/or Dad, here in the local area. ~ Collaborate with other professionals, doctors and specialists to make sure that people are getting the services, treatment and equipment that they need.
