The business support landscape has changed dramatically in the past year with the funding for Local Enterprise Partnerships ending and a move to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. We applaud Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire Growth Hub for reaching out to local businesses to gain insight from those on the front lines of growing businesses amidst the current economic climate to best align their offer moving forward with the needs of their community. #bestpractices #insights

Happy to have attended this engaging debate. It was encouraging to hear the green party candidate highlight the importance of social enterprise in business development for the region and the need to expand initiatives like retrofit to respond to the challenges we face. I still left with an uneasy sense that none of the main parties are really having an honest conversation about the scale of the existential crisis we face as a society. As a result the policies proposed don't address these challenges sufficiently. Instead many even risk exacerbating existing inequalities and accelerating climate breakdown. There's a lot of talk about good growth but the devil is in the detail. Do the policies proposed really address the above sufficiently and leave a society resilient enough to withstand and adapt to the accelerating pressures we will face? I remain entirely unconvinced.

2024 marks 20 years of Business Improvement Districts in the UK. We have the great pleasure of working with over 100 of these organisations, who are great champions for our towns, cities and high streets. If you don't know about BIDs these are the organisations voted in by the businesses in a defined area, and they are accountable to those businesses, delivering projects that will benefit those businesses. The best ones organise amazing events, trails and festivals that bring people into towns and create a vibrant town centre culture. BIDs have been under pressure this past year. For many, budgets have fallen through revaluations and as high streets convert more retail to housing. And as many councils face budgetary pressure, increasingly BIDs are taking on basic services like cleaning and security which should really be the purview of the local authorities except in a few specific instances. If you are lucky enough to have a BID in your town, I encourage you to support it. Follow them on social media, attend their events, raise their leaders up as local champions and be proud evangelists of your place. A £2bn development with 7,000 homes as well as shops, schools, social and medical facilities is being planned for a site near Edinburgh Airport. If planning permission is granted, West Town will span 205 acres between Gogar Roundabout and Ingliston Park and Ride. It is described as the single biggest homes-led development in Edinburgh in modern times. The development is designed so residents could live there without needing a car. Developers said the site would also have 27 acres of parks and a network of cycle, running and walking tracks. The West Town Edinburgh consortium, which is behind the plan, was formed in April 2021 by Drum Property Group. A big thanks to NAIOP Edmonton for inviting me to be part of this year's Broker Panel. I will never turn down an opportunity to talk about Restrictive Covenants and their impact on the industry 😉. In the fall, before my first foray into the public speaking panel world, sleep was lost in the days leading up and on stage my apple watch was definitely sending out warnings, "Hey, do you want us to call for help, your heart rate is alarmingly high for someone not moving?!". This time I made it through without an alert, didn't have to remind myself to breath and made some insightful comments about retail. It turns out it really does get easier the more you do it! But more than that, the opportunity to speak at a NAIOP event really was full circle for me. 11 years ago I sat at the boardroom table helping NAIOP launch in Edmonton and spent the next few years providing behind the scenes coordination and association management. Through my involvement with organizations like NAIOP and Edmonton CREW I built relationships with a wide range of people in the industry, which led to an opportunity at Avison Young | Canada and the rest, as they say, is history. Professional association memberships hold a lot of value for me, but you get out what you put in. Join the organization, get involved, attend the events and I guarantee you'll see a return on your investment. It may be a new job, an expansion on your circle of friends, or an opportunity to stretch yourself. So say yes, do the thing. We recently spoke with Andrew Chaban about his career and the collaborative benefits of working with NEBA members. Andrew, CEO of Princeton Properties and owner of 7400 apartments was NEBA's President in 2007. "Princeton Properties is a one-trick pony, 100% focused on multifamily, started in 1973 and we do one thing: "we are in the multifamily space." He describes a challenging time in his career as when they went outside of the box they are in, and built two extended stay hotels, and quickly and learned a valuable lesson, that extended stay hotels and furnished apartments were really quite different. "It taught us the lesson it’s really difficult to be good at one thing, never mind multiple things, so we focus just on apartments and we’ve grown to 7400 units." "In 1993 when I was starting out as CEO of Princeton, Andrew became quite involved at the state level with National Association of Homebuilders. "I would replicate that today, for people just starting out, I would want to grow my team in terms of advocacy piece without necessarily needing to pay individuals to do that for me. And that’s why I would tell anyone to join your local association. You have benefits at the state level of Joe Landers and Ben Fierro our lobbyist. You have 250 advocates working for you in Washington DC. So few members understand the educational, networking, and lobbying benefits of NAHB/NEBA...if you even use a fraction of the resources, the membership more than pays for itself."
