Due to the non-renewable nature of fluorspar mineral resources, as well as its extensive use in modern and emerging industries, fluorspar is considered a globally scarce mineral resource similar to that of rare earth elements and graphite. Countries around the world attach great importance to their mineral reserves of fluorspar with some adopting safeguard measures for resource exploitation and international trade. For example, the United States government lists fluorspar as a critical mineral and has implemented policies of mining protection and import-based policies.
