Bonuses or Feedback: Which is the better retention tool? Yesterday, Milbank announced special summer bonuses for associates ranging from $6k to $25k. I read a few posts about whether bonuses or partner feedback on an associate's work product and path to partnership are the better retention tool. Associates like money but they crave feedback. So in an ideal world, they would get both. We don't live in an ideal world. Bonuses are a short-term retention tool. They might keep an attorney around long enough to collect their check but they don't build loyalty. Feedback and a clear career path are long-term retention tools. Lawyers want to know where they stand and how to advance. This builds trust and keeps them invested for the long haul. So all things being equal, if I were advising a firm looking to increase its retention rate, I would tell them to give honest feedback and set clear goals. And paying bonuses doesn't hurt!
