This news story addresses the current and near-future challenges of Ontario’s aging population. It’s an important topic that, in my opinion, is missing a vital aspect of seniors being able to age well. It was not addressed by the reporter or the authors of the report. One interviewee touched on it with this comment: “Look around your home right now. What can you do to reduce your risk of falling?” Prevention is key. But it’s about more than just fixing loose area rugs or reducing clutter in your home. My concern is that no one is addressing the vital importance of fall prevention through physical activity. It’s all well and good to say “see how you can safeguard yourself from falls in the home”, but half of all falls happen outside the home. Is your body strong enough to maintain an upright position as you move throughout the day? Do you have enough strength in your legs to lift your foot over a curb? Fundamental body weight exercises, even in increments of a few minutes at a time, strengthen muscles and bones, and help seniors move about life more independently. https://lnkd.in/eNJn5iCy

As we know, care for the elderly leaves much to be desired in the U.S., especially for low-income, chronically ill people. Harvard Business Review recently did a deep dive into PACE Southeast Michigan, a great example of how the community-based care approach that we use at BoldAge as well can change the game for seniors with chronic illnesses.
