In #Detroit this week sharing time and space with public health leaders from across the country at the National Association of County and City Health Officials - NACCHO - conference. Yesterday's session: Towards a Just Environment in Wayne County Michigan led by Donele Wilkins, Abdul El-Sayed, MD, DPhil, Samuel Stolper and Darren Riley was an outstanding example of how public health protection and local air quality information go hand-in-hand and how you can't have one without the other. The panel's insights were really powerful - sharing a few below: Abdul El-Sayed, MD, DPhil: "What we are describing/building is an organizing tool" This simple statement struck me as profound. The information captured and shared from a highly granular, locally relevant monitoring network is the organizing tool. Policy change is the Holy Grail - but working backwards from that goal you see that 'so much of what is missing is public voice on the microphone'. This is where the distributed network has power - 'soft power' Donele Wilkins: "Those who bear the brunt of the pollution exposure must be heard and responded to" Community voice, expertise and trust are vital to advancing progress. For far too long local public health officials have not truly listened or responded to community air quality concerns - but there is a shift underway and more and more folks at the public health level are paying attention - in many cases thanks to Donele's tireless efforts. Darren Riley: Comparing the widespread adoption of local air quality monitoring with the impact of police body cams. You add the tech and the world now sees what's happening. Powerful analogy to an otherwise invisible threat. So much more work to do. But I am deeply inspired by the humility and dedication of this group. Onward. #airquality #publichealth
