Back from my first #LMEweek ! I found it interesting to see how other metal markets are doing vs the #battery ones (spoiler, quite well some of them). Not all commodities are in the same point of the common boom and bust cycles. My small contribution, in tandem with François Fontaine , to the event sponsored by #mckinsey and MineSpans by McKinsey was on battery materials (so original, Nicolò) with these key messages: - two factors are key to understand demand for nickel, lithium and any other battery related raw materials: demand volume growth and chemistry evolution - volumes are dictated by adoption of #EV but also #grid storage applications (ESS) - chemistry is governed by technology but also raw materials prices - lastly, if needed, we can do without each and any raw materials if availability is not there. So can we have EVs if there is no lithium/nickell/graphite/manganese/cobalt…? Yes, not as good but yes London Metal Exchange

Deep Learning, AI-Powered Decision System Developer, Investment, Exploration in New Energy Transition Metals (Li, Cu, Ni) and Precious Metals, and Geoscience
The battery materials market is a complex and dynamic sector that is closely linked to the development of the clean energy transition. The demand for battery materials is largely driven by the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), which require high-performance batteries to power their motors. However, the supply of battery materials is also influenced by various factors, such as the availability of raw materials, the geopolitical situation, the environmental and social impacts, and technological innovations. In this paper, we explore the current state of the battery materials market in 2024, focusing on the main challenges and opportunities that arise from oversupply and macroeconomic headwinds. We examine the trends and outlooks of the key battery materials, such as lithium, cobalt, manganese, nickel, and graphite, and how they affect the price and profitability of the sector. We also discuss the implications of the weak price environment and the persistent volatility for capital investment and innovation in the battery materials market.

Following on from my repost of Roger Atkins post lauding LFP batteries, here is a great inforgraphic build around some good data and predictions. A CAGR of 19% isnt too shabby either... get your shares in these battery companies! The authors and illustrators at VC do great job btw! Visual Capitalist https://lnkd.in/e3F-Tx3e

🍾 Next-generation #battery electrolytes require the build out of new supply chains, each of which have their own potential bottlenecks. Sulphide-based electrolytes have the immediate issue of limited lithium sulphide supplies, whereas polymer and novel liquid electrolytes have the immediate concern of electrolyte salts. Oxide-based electrolytes have a little more breathing room with no bottlenecks of immediate concern. However, in the medium- to long-term supplies of lanthana and zirconia could become limiting. Benchmark's Solid-State and Lithium Metal Battery Forecast data alongside our Rare Earth Forecast shows that from the mid-2030s, #lanthanum demand from oxide-based solid-state batteries could exceed supply of refined lanthanum. "When developing any technology it is important to understand the raw materials that are required to create key components and identify any bottleneck that could impact commercial roll-out as early as possible," Rory McNulty, product director for new technology at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence said. Big news happened in the lithium market this week. Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL), which is one of China’s largest EV producers, reportedly halted production at a mine in Jiangxi province. Some sources have stated that this is a closure, while others say it’s a production “adjustment.” Therefore, the exact long-term market implications are unclear. The lithium carbonate has been in steep bear market for months, due to oversupply amid stagnating demand. Will this Chinese production news finally break the downtrend? I’m happy to have a deeper discussion on the battery metal markets in private. – Chris (Chart courtesy TRADING ECONOMICS) #commodities #trading #markets #metals #economy #economics #hedgefunds #hedgefund #money #investing #investment #business #familyoffice #oil #energy #finance #stockmarket
