Critical Raw Minerals and the green transition is increasingly becoming relevant to many areas of trade, investment and environment. Tedd Moya one of the panelists highlighted the geopolitical dimension and highlighted the disconnect between the source of these critical resources (resource-rich countries) and where they are processed. When energy and production are close to the resources, it leads to a more just and greener transition. https://lnkd.in/dGZyjX-d

I'm prepping for an interview on the EU conflict minerals regulation today and turned to my team for their reflections on my key talking points. They reminded me of this excellent blog authored by colleagues Julie Schindall and Ashley Smith-Roberts, Esq., LL.M. on the EU Batteries Regulation. It sets out the scope and implications for industry, as well as giving tips on how to comply efficaciously. If you need help to build a strategy or the management systems necessary to comply with the EU Batteries Regulation, Levin Sources is here to help. https://lnkd.in/ecKwper9 #batteries #duediligence #UNGPs #responsiblesourcing #humanrights #ESG #minerals #responsiblebusinessconduct

All hail the climate revolution! In my annual letter to the sector, I explore how #climatechange #tunnelvision is a threat to progress, especially in a context of withering democracies, economic stagnation and deepening geopolitical bifurcation, ecological degradation, and conflict. I share how we have been working to broaden the lens and address this complexity at Levin Sources. Sleeves are definitely rolled up. As usual, #humanrights and #ecologicalresilience are at the heart of how we confront these challenges. But so are concepts of diversity, benefit sharing, accountability, education and compassion. These align closely to our values at Levin Sources. If we can move the sector forward and realise these values more, then I think we all have a fighting chance. Thanks for being on this journey with us. There is great comfort and power in cooperation. I look forward to continuing our important joint work together in 2024.
"As we kick off 2024, the tension between the need for transitioning to cleaner energy and therefore scaling minerals supply as quickly as possible whilst doing it as ethically and sustainably as possible is at the top of my mind. Nowhere is this requirement more visible than in our sector, as we see every day in our cross-value chain work." Read and share our CEO and Founder Estelle Levin-Nally CDir Dip IoD's Letter to the Minerals Sector below.

Research Scientist Just Transition, Sustainable Consumption and Production, Energy, Environment, and Climate Change
This is an important step needed for a just transition for climate change
**On transition minerals, a UN Panel and the exciting prospects of a united CSO front for mineral and climate justice** As the world moves from fossil fuels to renewable energies (too slowly and without a just transition plan, but that’s for another post), the risks of another wave of extraction, poverty, and pollution in the Global South are materialising, as government and companies try to secure access to more lithium, graphite, nickel and other so-called Transition Minerals. A few weeks ago, the UN Secretary General appointed me as Climate Action Network International 's representative to its new Panel on Critical Transition Minerals. I feel very honored and also a bit anxious… another UN Panel? To be honest, this one has a special flavour to me, as an unusual climate activist, rooted in the need for just transition, rights and alternative development pathways. In its framing to the Panel, SG António Guterres asked us to recommend principles to avoid “repeating the mistakes of the past, with a systematic exploitation of developing countries reduced to the production of basic raw materials”. He insisted on the need for a ‘clean energy revolution that is done in a sustainable, fair and just way’. I can only agree with those prompts and will try my best to help the Panel figure out outcomes that advance a just transition. The Panel has only started last week and will be working until September. I will keep you updated on progress. I also wanted to share what is emerging as an equally exciting development: civil society groups working on mining and on climate justice are talking to each other. I had the pleasure to exchange with the amazing Payal Sampat and the MET network, be inspired by the SIRGE Coalition , Natural Resource Governance Institute 's Erica Westenberg and Suneeta Kaimal, Robin Roels from the EU Raw Materials Coalition, and many CAN members, Jim Wormington from Human Rights Watch, Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, AIDA - Interamerican Association for Environmental Defense, FARN, Global Witness, Recourse, CAN Latin America, Greenpeace International… Climate will not be used to justify sacrifice zones nor human rights violations - not in our name. And the energy in the group makes me feel we'll put a good fight! Reach out if there is a principle or an action which could contribute to securing justice on transition minerals that we should take to the Panel! https://lnkd.in/edTbrnhw
