I am extremely delighted to share with you my first published article. In this study, I explore how the experience of learning a foreign language academically influences the linguistic attitudes of students by examining UM5 English Department students. The findings provide valuable insights into the intersection of language education and student perception, which could have implications for curriculum development and pedagogical strategies. I am pleased to share that the second edition of VATE's free member resource Middle Ground has now been launched. This edition has been written to support teachers with the teaching of consent through the use of literature and includes a worked example of how to do this using Disney's Beauty and the Beast. This work is underpinned by affirmative consent - no convoluted explanations of consent using milkshakes or tea in sight! While the lesson sequence has been mapped to the curriculum for Year 10 English, some of the activities may be adapted for students in other year levels and in other subject areas. Key themes and knowledge explored in this edition of Middle Ground include: 🔹 Affirmative consent 🔹 Attitudes and beliefs around relationships 🔹 Power dynamics and the romanticising of problematic behaviours 🔹 Healthy relationships 🔹 Complexities of social and cultural expectations 🔹 The language of sex and gender This resource also includes a list of suggested texts including short stories, films, popular culture, novels, and non-fiction titles, as well as extensive links to legislation, definitions, resources, and supplementary reading to help in the teaching of this material. Middle Ground is available to download here: https://lnkd.in/g_xDJ4iF
The second edition of VATE's MIDDLE GROUND is out now! Written by South Australian English teacher Bridie Connell, this edition focuses on the teaching of consent through literature and is mapped to the Victorian and Australian curricula for Year 10 English. By harnessing the skills of critical thinking, analysis and inference, and the teaching of contextual knowledge, English teachers are well situated to build students’ empathetic capacity and reveal the ways in which language and ambiguity play integral roles in seeking and understanding consent. This MIDDLE GROUND is designed to help explore affirmative consent with students. MIDDLE GROUND is a free VATE member resource. Interstate teaching colleagues who are members of their state/territory ETA can contact their State Delegate or AATE for a copy of the resource to use. MIDDLE GROUND can be downloaded here: https://lnkd.in/dUcx2rzu
