✨The University of Canterbury's Faculty of Engineering is at the forefront of advancing engineering education through a variety of initiatives. These include mentorship programs, a renewed emphasis on diversity and inclusion, alignment with the new graduate attributes outlined by Engineering New Zealand Te Ao Rangahau and the Washington Accord (including ethics, bicultural competence, and sustainability), hosting a Major International Conference (Australasian Association for Engineering Education) and an Annual Learning and Teaching Workshop. Our evolving curriculum and teaching methods are designed to address the dynamic changes brought about by artificial intelligence, ensuring a robust approach to ethics, indigenous values, and wisdom, as appropriate to the New Zealand context, and other critical areas. In this context, the establishment of an engineering education research group is a natural progression. During a recent discussion with IEEE Education Society (EdSoc) President Martín Llamas Nistal, a professor at the atlanTTic Research Center, University of Vigo, Spain, and Past President Edmundo Tovar, a professor at the Technical University of Madrid the idea of forming a local IEEE Education Society chapter in New Zealand South is a possibility. Such a chapter could enhance existing efforts, fostering collaboration and innovation in engineering education at regional and global levels. ✨The importance of engineering education lies in its potential to integrate what we have learned about learning as both an art and a science over the last two decades. By applying these insights, we can enhance recruitment and retention and further positive student experience and deepen alumni engagement. Faculty renewal is so important to enable innovation in both research and engineering education
While it often takes a few years to set up the lab, recruit and train the first students, some early career researchers have shown very impressive research outcomes already. “Watching our early career faculty members rapidly blossom into highly accomplished researchers with achievements worthy of celebration has been nothing short of inspiring,” says Vice-Dean (Research) Amir Fam. “Their ability to secure substantial funding and produce groundbreaking and award-winning research has surpassed our expectations.” https://lnkd.in/dapsQNHK
