“Researchers have discovered plant-based meat products offer no 'clear benefit' for heart health. People who ate fake sausages, burgers and mince also seemingly had worse blood pressure than their meat-consuming counterparts. Experts today labelled the 'health halo' surrounding plant-based meats unjustifiable and urged the food industry to 're-evaluate the development of the next generation of meat alternatives'.”

🫘 🫛 Great post below from Sarah Daly about the benefits of eating beans! 🫘 🫛 The comments on her post underline how divisive this is as a subject. What we eat goes to who we are and what we stand for. It is always an emotional topic. But we need a rational conversation about it. We don't all need to be vegan (I happen to be one and love it most of the time - although not in some restaurants. If I have to eat another mushroom risotto I will scream!) But we do all need to massively reduce our consumption of meat. This will allow essential reclamation of land for nature, and carbon capture and massively reduce deforestation. If we were all mainly plant based we would be able to give back to nature 50% of the land currently used for farming. If we were all vegan we could give back 75% of the land that is farmed. What I don't understand is why those who seem so angry about this post do not see 🫘 the need for us all to make some changes to how we eat if we are to have any chance of getting out of the mess we are in, and 🫘 that those who make the switch to a predominantly or mainly plant based diet will be heathier and financially better off. We need governments to introduce policies that encourage more plant based and less meat eating. Dale Vince calls this subject "the cow in the room". He also said recently 'choose what you chew more carefully' - I could not agree more. #climatecrisis #naturecrisis #plantbaseddiets #landuse #rewiliding #deforestation

This post isn't designed to irritate meat eaters, just demonstrate the massive difference, by every measure, of beans over beef for health ... and to explode some myths that animal protein and other nutrients are somehow higher quality than plant-based. Let's add two more dimensions: Carbon footprint: Beef - approx 100kg CO2 per kg Beans - approx 1kg CO2 per kg Cost: Beef - approx £17-40 per kg Beans - approx £3-£5 per kg #fullofbeans

🌱 “Spill the Beans: Why They’re Better Than Beef!” 🫘 Beef might be packed with protein, but here’s the juicy truth: Beans are the real MVP when it comes to balancing nutrition, cost, and health impact. Sure, beef has its benefits—iron, protein, B vitamins—but it comes at a hefty price, both financially and environmentally. Even with government subsidies, beef is still more expensive, and that cost trickles down to our wallets, health, and the planet. 💸🌍 Meanwhile, beans offer a nutritional one-two punch: 🫘 High in protein – Perfect for building muscle, just like beef! 🫘 Rich in fiber – Helps digestion, stabilizes blood sugar, and keeps you fuller for longer. 🫘 Packed with vitamins and minerals – Iron, magnesium, potassium, and more—all without the cholesterol and saturated fats found in red meat. 🫘 Low-cost and widely accessible – Beans are the budget-friendly choice that doesn’t compromise on nutrition, making healthy eating attainable for more people. Why the shift matters: 🍖 Beef contributes to higher cholesterol, heart disease, and environmental damage from high carbon emissions. 🌱 Beans, on the other hand, help to improve overall health, reduce disease risk, and promote better health equality. By making plant-based foods more central to our diets, we can make nutritious meals more affordable and accessible to everyone📢📢 Health, equality, and sustainability? Beans are crushing it on all fronts. So, maybe it’s time to switch gears and rethink the heavy reliance on beef. 💚🌍 #FullOfBeans #BeansForBetterHealth #HealthEquality #Nutrition #Sustainability #PlantBasedEating #BeefVsBeans

Progress is about efficiency. Plant based is more efficient and less polluting than beef. Electric vehicles are a lot more efficient than ICE (up to 80%). And renewable energy is a lot more efficient than fossil fuels (up to 66%). That doesn’t mean we all need to stop consuming meat, but if everybody keeps it to a max of two times per week we can quickly create a liveable planet for all. And remember: happy meat from companies like Mosa Meat are quickly coming to market 🙏🏻 the future is here Read about it in my book ‘Het kan dus wél’ from Alfabet Uitgevers

Think these posts are misleading Protein, which proteins? Iron, what form? Same with other micronutrients Cholesterol, good Water, what form, from what source? Essentially all if not most European and UK beef is rainfed. Stock water consumes small amounts, esp given the fact that most is then urinated onto pasture or straw Unless beans are irrigated that number should be zero also In the UK and much of northern Europe they are US and southern countries, irrigation often from fossil sources Along with alfalfa for example Not the crop's fault C footprint an issue here KG of produce is not a transferrable metric For example a kg of Cheerios isn't the same as a kg of apples Need to quote like for like Kg of spec protein for example Also, how calculated? Actual product is C neg/neutral, as are beans. All C emissions from the crops themselves came from the air Ferts, transport , storage, processing etc are not So again, what's being measured here? Also, how much carbs? Carb load for beans, is much higher That's an issue If you need to metabolise high carb loads in order to meet protein requirements that's an insulin resistance risk factor And no mention of fat By far the best form of energy, with many (fat soluble) vitamins coming with Trimming/ lean meat breeding reduces this Again, not the crop's fault Plenty of breeds that produce better marbled meat & fat cover While grass finished gives better Omega ratios No omegas mentioned for beans Also, finally, really don't think dietary choice is a particularly good way to effect change in the supply chain If it were, the current plant based wave would see swathes of horticulture producers doing swimmingly Spoiler alert, they're really not. So where's all these plants coming from?
