This ruling makes the work we do before state utility regulators and legislatures all the more important. Given the challenging new landscape for federal agencies created by today’s decision, state-level policy on climate action and environmental protection is more critical than ever. Well done
APHA applauds the decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals to keep an Environmental Protection Agency rule intact, a move that will protect Americans' health from further effects of climate change. The EPA rule would force many coal-fired power plants to significantly reduce carbon emissions within eight years. https://lnkd.in/eB44W6nG

Two developments toward the end of 2023 have clouded the future of climate policy in the Pacific Northwest. First, opponents of Washington’s Climate Commitment Act submitted more than 400,000 signatures to the Washington Secretary of State’s office supporting Initiative 2117. Second, the Oregon Court of Appeals struck down Oregon’s Climate Protection Program, concluding that the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality did not provide proper notice when it adopted the program by administrative rulemaking. #TheEnvironmentalLawFirm #Washington #Oregon #ClimateChange

Thirteen states got US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) funding for their climate plans, but many others are still looking for ways to move forward. The good news? Billions in federal money, tax credits, and loans are still up for grabs to support these critical projects. By combining different funding options, states can turn their climate goals into reality. Let’s keep the momentum going and make sure no one misses out. Learn how your state can get the support it needs: https://bit.ly/3Xa51J9

It’s been an extraordinary (not in a good way) fortnight for environmental protection and climate in WA. This week’s Bill undermining of the EPA’s independence, is on the back of the appointment of an industry-backed EPA Chair last week. Add to this the indefinite delay in WA’s climate legislation and the WA Government taking carbon emissions reduction powers off the EPA and a clear picture emerges of a WA Government gutting environmental protections and climate action to enable more fossil fuel extraction.

Industry in Western Australia can offer us benefits, but without appropriate controls can cause a lot of harm. Our living systems are endangered by pollution and waste. Regulation is more important than ever. Clear emissions reduction targets and an independent Environmental Protection Authority with enforcement powers are essential. We need a state government that can stand up to polluting industries.
