The New Zealand Institute of Safety Management NZISM - A post in two parts . . . Part two
Those listening to Jeff speaking to the NZISM Auckland branch recently, where he stated that the HSW Act is OK and doesn't need massive change might want to consider this is the same man who promoted the work of equity activist Kate Pickett and Richard Wilkinson. Pickett promoted the Occupy movement started in 2009 and came to international attention in 2011 with the Occupy Wall Street protest. Spreading like a global pandemic, part of an era of political consciousness and anti-government protests, it included the Arab Spring which led to the Islamist winter, civil wars, regional instability, sectarianism, economic demographic decline, mass human displacement, illegal immigration, countless deaths, increasing global instability.
In an interview with The Guardian Pickett stated “This is why we need the Occupy movement and the staunch actions of the trade unions – why we need protest and demonstrations and activism. We must continue to demand that politics and policy serve the needs of the many, not the selfish demands of the few – the evidence supports this and so does the democratic opinion of the vast majority of the people.”
Back home, in the Council of Trade Unions’ response to the sentencing provision of the Health and Safety Reform Bill, Jeff called the sentencing provision incoherent, and for the mens rea for ‘recklessness’ to be reduced to that of negligence and wilfulness. A man who on the passing of HSWA legislation said "the Government lost its nerve in select committee and the bill came back bearing dozens of cuts and compromises to appease National's backers.”
More recently a news release from NZISM President Robyn Bennett stated “when we speak with one voice . . . our message carries greater weight and it allows us to push for legislative changes, influence industry practices”.
What we are witnessing is the ‘collectivisation’ of the health and safety profession. If unchecked, Jeff’s political activist ideology, combined with NZISM’s entrenched socialist identity politics, will aid the process designed to deconstruct (decolonise as promoted by NZISM) the fabric of western democracy, and will slowly but surely filter down through the indoctrination of ‘health & safety’ ideologues under the guise of continual professional development, one small lie at a time. The likely outcome of ‘one voice’ collectivism being increased organisational paralysis, and psychosocial red tape.
There are signs of a political will for change, the country voted for it, but there are still forces at work to undermine this change, in the media and elsewhere. If the desired change is to progress the health and safety of all New Zealand workers, and to contribute to an inclusive, successful and thriving economy, the current governance cabal and senior leadership team of the New Zealand Institute of Safety Management NZISM, are not fit for purpose, and should stand down.
