Ensure unwavering compliance with AML & Compliance requirements, meticulously meeting regulatory standards, while maintaining and optimizing policies and procedures for the overall adequacy of the UK Compliance Programme. Take charge of Regulatory Reporting, meticulously preparing and submitting accurate reports to regulatory authorities, including suspicious transaction reports (STRs), and ensuring comprehensive internal record keeping. Stay abreast of regulatory changes and proactively update reporting processes to align with evolving compliance landscapes. Conduct thorough KYB procedures on both new and existing customers, establishing a meticulous audit trail to enhance due diligence practices. Implement effective transaction monitoring and reporting mechanisms specific to the payments business. Collaborate seamlessly with compliance colleagues to strengthen global compliance efforts, actively contributing to the ongoing development of the global Compliance team. Lead a comprehensive training program focused on mitigating ML issues, ensuring the team remains informed and adept in navigating compliance challenges. Criminals and enforcers share the same skillset. Tax evaders and tax authorities know the same loopholes. Money launderers and anti-money laundering officers understand common laundering techniques. Drug syndicates and anti-drug enforcers are both masters of the illicit drug supply chain. It's essentially the same gang, just donning either a black hat or a white hat. Criminals obtain legal cover by donning a white hat, trafficking drugs under the guise of enforcement, hiring a bank compliance officer as Mafia advisor, and so on. And the best person to cook the books is an auditor.

Interesting article about the issues facing compliance officers. Which reminded me about a suggestion I submitted to HSBC a long time ago (possibly even before the 2008 financial crisis) which had been inspired by my experience as a specialist in-house banking/financial services lawyer of dealing with countless compliance officers over many years in relation to regulated products/services ... the good ones were great and very knowledgeable ... the rest were keen but often misguided due to their relative lack of regulatory knowledge and/or experience so that I knew much more than they did (which is probably not surprising but it was extremely frustrating) and could propose much more appropriate solutions. My suggestion .. which had much broader application across every skilled workforce .. Fewer Better People. The AI revolution is likely to bring this about anyway but the armies of compliance officers which have been deployed over the last 15 years snd the level of fines and regulatory sanctions during that period show that the C suite in the banking world haven't really understood the problem and/or have been too focussed on short-term measures and keeping their regulators happy.
