Anesthesia Professionals: Are You Missing the Post-Op Picture on Hypotension? A recent public safety notice from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (APSF) highlights a critical issue: intraoperative hypotension (IOH) and its link to serious complications for patients. Studies show IOH is associated with increased risk of mortality, kidney injury, heart damage, and even stroke. The APSF highlighted a recent study of over 22,000 patients that reported 88% of noncardiac surgery patients experienced at least one episode of IOH with a mean duration of 28.2 minutes. How does this happen? Reducing IOH may be challenging when using traditional intermittent oscillometric BP (IOBP) monitoring with an arm cuff. Concerns with IOBP monitoring include delayed or missed detection of BP changes or hypotensive episodes, inaccuracy during hemodynamic extremes, and overestimation of BP during hypotension resulting in more severe episodes than realized. The problem? Anesthesia providers often lack access to crucial post-operative data, making it difficult to assess the impact of IOH. This variability in practice can have serious consequences. How can IOH be addressed? The APSF authors close with a simple call to action: “We should monitor continuously with advanced hemodynamic technologies where pertinent to avoid undetected IOH.” Here's where VitalStream can help.
